Have about three quarters of a mile worth of fence line I need to spray with Roundup to keep clean, and also may have as much 3-5 acres of land I may want to spray in the future with fertilizer and/or weed killer to develop a nice grass pasture. I have never had a sprayer before. Would I need a sprayer that sprays off to one side so that I could just ride along the fence line to spray, and one that could also spray a wide path behind to get the fields? What specific sprayer would you recommend? I could use a tractor or a Mule to do this job. Thanks!

I built my own boom with 4 spray heads, with valves between each so I could spray with any single spray nozzle or all 4. I built it to spray along rows of trees, and to spray along fence lines. I also use it for herbicide and for fertilizer.

I mounted it on my garden tractor on the front weight bar. Pull a 30 gal. nurse tank with a 12 v Shurflo pump. Works great. There are several commercial ones that would do the same (may have to add the shut-off valves between the spray heads).

You can buy 25 gallon towable sprayers or tanks that mount to you 4 wheeler that are a little smaller, say 15 gallons. These can come with a 3-4 foot spray width boom and also have a wand that can be used for spot application or just held inhand for application to a fence row as you slowly drive down it.

As Clemsonfor suggested, there are tanks for ATV's or garden tractors that can be towed or mounted on an ATV, depending on which one you choose. After we moved to where we are now, I borrowed a tow behind version, I think 15 gal., from the neighbor and it worked pretty well for broad leaf weed control applications. I towed it behind my garden tractor. It had a self contained electric pump and its own 12 volt battery. After I got a compact tractor, I bought a 55 gallon version and a PTO pump. It is "boomless" and you can set the nozzles to spray just one side or any combination. Below is a link to an similar ATV version.

I recently purchased a 15 gallon spot sprayer just to use with round-up type products. It only has the spot sprayer, not a boom, but I did not think it was that likely I would want to kill really large areas. I just sit it in my bucket with a trolling motor battery and drive down the fence line spraying or I can park and spray if I have an area I want to hit a little harder. It really worked well and I spent less than $100 for it.

I did not notice you mentioned that you had a tractor. Below is the one I bought for the tractor. You have to add a PTO pump and a coupling and it does not come with the spot spray wand. I added it too. For my purposes which is spraying weed control or weed & feed 2 or 3 times a year it works fine. I am also not concerned about pin point application for a garden or crops. But with the boomless, you probably have to be more concerned with wind conditions. On the other hand I don't have to worry about catching the boom on a tree in the yard. I think the Fimco products fall into the basic level. I'm sure there are higher end products for commercial users.

Thanks for your responses! In choosing the right size sprayer, I'll need to figure out how many gallons it will take to spray just the fence line- what is your experience here? How many gallons to get .75 mile of fence? Thanks!

have no idea but it goes a long way, i sprayed 30 gallons out of my friends spot sprayer (15 gals) and i hit every sweetgum and persimmion that had popped up in my field that i am trying to reclaim, as there were several, multi years that it did not get cut. and it was a lot and i soaked all of them good.

I could do that with my 30 gal sprayer, even using all four spray heads on with 12 psi pressure.

The 12v pumps on the 15 gal spot sprayers burn up pretty fast when you start using them for continuous duty like boom spraying a couple of acres. Don't ask how I know ;)

When spraying acreage you will want something that has good capacity and a big enough pump to handle a wide boom/swath. Less filling up and less passes.

How many gallons you need to spray a .75 mile fence will depend on how heavy and how wide you are putting it down. If you are just going for right under the fence about 12" wide I think you could possibly get it done with a 15 gallon sprayer.

You might look at getting a 15 gallon for spraying the fence and spot spraying and then something more heavy duty when you are ready to start spraying the field.

Blue 55 g drum with a shur flo pump and a coily garden hose. Car battery.
Generic roundup is about $40 for 5 gallons. One of those in the drum takes care of just about anything.
