spring loaded oil filter??

Google came up with a bunch of sites but I would rather have TBN'ers opinions and comments.
We just purchased a 06 Sienna van and the salesman said be sure to use "spring loaded oil filter".
I had never heard of that description. What do you all have to say?

I don't want to "get a horse" but I would like to get thoughts from any horses mouth. (my confidence in TBN opinions is very high)

A spring loaded oil filter you say. Hmmmmmm? Well I have been a mechanic most of my life and I don't think I have ever heard some call a oil filter spring loaded. Do automotive oil filters have spring's in them? Yes, most of them do now day's. The spring-loaded metal bypass valve and a silicone rubber diaphram-type anti-drainback valve, which doubles as the seal between the backplate and the cartridge.

Best bang for the buck in top notch filters is the Puralator Pure One.

Now I believe some of the old cars that had the canister type filter on the firewall had a spring in them, but it was not in the filter.
I agree with the salesman comment, just get a good grade filter listed for your vehicle.

Reread my first post. Almost all modern oil filters have spring's in them. It's part of the bypass system that is designed into them. Some have flat style spring's, some have round coil spring's but most all of them have them if they are worth a darn. Click the link in the other post to see pictures of what I'm talking about. Without a bypass valve in the filter if the filter plugged up your engine would be starved for oil and the crank would lock up. With the bypass valve in the oil filter if the filter should ever happen to get plugged up to the point of restricting oil preasure to low it will push the actual filter element in the filter housing down (that's what the spring is for) thereby allowing oil to "bypass" the filter element and keep you from destroying your engine.

Once again TBN delivers the goods. Thanks. I failed to state the reason given for using a "spring loaded" filter. The "salesman" said without the spring, oil would drain down when the engine was stopped and when starting the pistons/valves etc would have to wait until oil was pumped to the "dry" locations. Since I haven't kept up with modern technology that made sense at the time.

that sienna is a toyota right?i think that the salesman was referring to you using a toyota brand oil filter as they have an anti drain feature in them to keep the oil from draining back into the pan,i guess to reduce the time of no oil in the engine at start up.i have a 1999 toyota tacoma and have used toyota oil filters for the life of it and have had no problems as of yet with a fast approaching 100,000 miles.i would suggest to use them they are cheap insurance.

Thats the function of the silicone anti drainback valve in the image.

Now see.. that's what you get for someone actually explaining something to a salesman. Now.. armed with that new tidbit of data.. that is going to be a buzzword for the salesman. I'll bet he tells that to all of his customers now.. and I'll be he feel's smarter too. ( ARGH!?!?! ).. just what we need.. salesman that know .001% of something... and think they are engineers...
