One of the spools on my loader valve just recently broke off at the top where it connects with the joystick. I could not get a replacement spool so I had mine repaired at a machine shop. The break did not affect the function of the valve, just its connection to the joystick. I removed the spool myself. Now that I've reinserted it, the valve still functions correctly but the spring to center in only one direction doesn't work. There really aren't that many parts so I am certain I put it back together correctly. Like I said, it still functions but in one direction it does not spring back to center. The valve body is one piece and does not come apart, only the spools slide out. Is there something internal I need to reset before I insert the spool? Or any ideas what may be the issue?

was there a centering spring on each end or just on one end?

There are two springs on one end. Just FYI this is the spool that has the float position. Really that's all the springs we see. It doesn't seem like its rocket science to put them back in but when reassembled there is no spring to center in one direction. One of these springs handles one direction of spring to center and it works. The second one I think may have something to do with the float maybe. I just don't know what is centering the other direction. I wondered if there was an internal spring.

Does the spool detent into float position?

What connects the springs to the spool?

Time to be captain obvious and don't want to offend you.

On the valves I have worked on in the past there was a washer-spring stop that went on the spool, then the spring was installed and the spring retaining system was installed.

The springs MUST be retained in such a way that the spool movement compresses one of them. This maybe performed via the end cover and spring retainers that hit stops in the cover. I would suggest looking carefully at the components / assembly to how it is supposed to work.

Yes the float works and detents and stays. All the functionality of the valve seems to work. I can feel a small amount of pressure trying to spring to center but its not enough to actually do it.

I might need to take some pictures but here is the layout. There is a cap on the end that holds everything in. Next is a spring. Next is a spacer with a bearing in it. This is for the float detent. then another spring. That's it. The top spring (last one I mentioned) re-centers the upward motion. The downward motion does not spring back to center. I'm not sure it is the other spring that does this. It seems to work the detent.

Maybe the top spring does both?

Only one spring is connected to the spool, the top spring. It looks like its got a lock ring on it somehow. When repairing the spool, I did not take this off. I left it on the spool.
