spring

There you go Kerrminator... not only did you get a wonderful welcome from Timber, but you got Eddie Walker himself to reply. If you have some time (a lot of it) you might read some of his threads on the progress of his resort... simply amazing. He's building a nearly 5 acre lake, so knows (or is learning) a thing or two about water. Anyway, I don't think you'll get any more rude replies to your posts. Good luck on the project.

Oh, and if you find yourself looking around for some sort of tractor, don't blame me. These folks can be contagious. :D

Kerrminator,

The thread NorthwestBlue is talking about is here in the Projects section and called "Creating a Lake." I've never quite figured out how to link these replies to a thread, so you'll have to click on search and type it in there, or you can always click on a members name, than click on there public profile and scroll down to a link that says something like, All threads started by this person.

I'm not really building a resort, but an RV Park and Campground. It's a long term project that has no completion date. I work on it as I can afford it and figure one of these years I'll have something here. It's a do-it-yourselfer project that's just a little ovewhelming. hahaha

I'm no were close to being knowledgeable about building lakes or ponds. That thread is my fifth pond, but by far the largest. As of right now, it's still just a giant dry hole in the ground, so I don't even know for sure it will hold water.

If I was buying land for my personal use, I'd sure want to be in your situation with a flowing spring!!!!!

Good luck,
Eddie

Picture#2 shows the small gulley which a small stream runs down.
Picture#3 shows the usual amount of water.

Picture#2 shows the water dropping down another level and spreading out again.
Picture#3 is a close up of the muck.

That is a nice project and situation to work on.

Do you have access to rocks?

I'd invision a small meandering stream between small ponds. Somewhere a working water wheel turning a device of some type should be placed.

Other places may incorporate a small water fall or water trickling over a rock sheet to the start of another stream or pond.

Shrubs and flowers could be used to create private places. Other places could be left open. Try and work some bird feeders into the layout.

Your options are only limited by the amount of work you wish to do. Japanese gardens may be the look you are aiming for.

Vist your local library and spend an afternoon with landscaping books looking at pictures and then slowly start to develop ideas of what you wish to end up with.

I have to ask, Have you had anyone out to tell you what your under ground water table looks like. I have herd people digging there ponds and the sinking a well and let to pond fill and find its own balance. The reason I state this is it will let you ignore your spring, dig your pond and then tap your water table with and artesian well and the pond will find its own balance with the water pressure from the wt. of the pond water. Just a thought

Can any one direct me to a resource that explains how to create a nice flowing creek out of a underground spring that surfaces out of a hole in the ground and saturates a wide area? Would it be best to have a pools to have a small resevoir of water as it disseminates down the hill.Keep in mind this project is all hand dug.Thanks.;)

Hi Kerminator,
I don't know the answers to your question, but have been developing a spring on my place. Work is still in progress & we have been flying by the seat of our pants, but am pleased with the progress.

1. Installed a 6' diameter fiberglass tank over it with pea gravel around.

2. Flows around 3 to 4 GPM depending on water level. This is now, during one of the dryest years we have had.

3. Installed a 2500 gal storage tank & started watering lawn from this.

4. Installed an additional 10,000 gal storage tank (tanks were free)

5. Spring started making a small pond outside the casing and would run back inside when water level was pumped down, so we have started making pond larger as we have time.

6. Have started putting in a lawn irrigation system, so far about 50 heads. Pump will run 20 to 25 heads at once.

7. I think the spring produces around 4/5 thousand gallons per day & we now have around 20,000 gal storage, tanks plus pond.

8. We pump from the spring to storage tanks with a 1 hp swimming pool filter pump and pump from the tanks to the lawn with a 2 hp 50 gpm pump. It is all automated. Spring keeps tanks full, if there is any water in the spring. We have much more we want to do, but it is beginning to look like a successful project.

Replys have been great...Hgtv landscaping gave me an idea of digging a dry creek bed using landscape matting to keep down weeds and throw down some gravel. Sloped sides and varying the width of the stream from 8" to 16". Nice larger stones along the side. When I am ready ---Divert the water. Plant some ferns etc.... :D I really am interested in having this water directed to reclaim soggy areas....as far as i am concerned the water can flow down the creek and down into the gulley at the very back of the property and which would flow down a gulley to join the creek at the bottom.
