manager at work asked me if I knew amything about plumbing.. :) .. then asked me a funny one that I though I had an answer for.. but it had a twist.

she can hear a squeal in the bathroom wall when the house outside is running.. Ok.. we've all seen that.

here's the odd part .. if she flushes her toilet.. it stops.. BUT won't stop if she runs her sink.. all on the same water line ...

any ideas on how to fix?

no water hammer either.. asked about that already..

My first guess, the out side faucet OR commode valve has slow leak.

Is it safe to assume that when the toilet tank is filled, then the squealing in the wall resumes?

Suppose the plumbing is set up this way. Tracing the water line starting at the supply, suppose there is first a tee for the toilet, followed by a tee for the outside faucet, followed by a tee for the sink. In other words, the toilet is upstream of the outside faucet, and the sink is downstream.

In that way, if the squealing place is between the toilet and the outside faucet, flushing the toilet would reduce the flow past the squeal, reducing the sound, but the sink would increase the flow, not reducing the sound.

I suppose one fix would be to remove the float from the toilet tank... :D :D

What kind of pipes, and are they easily accessible?

Replace the valve and seat in the outside faucet.

coppr pipe, non accessible.

and yeah.. faucet outside house is on that same wall and could very well be after the toilet, befor ethe sink.

valve and seat should not matter..squeal ONLY happens when outside hose is running... when off, no squeal. no leaks either.. ie.. no drips..

I agree that the outside sillcock could be making the noise.

I would remove the valve stem, replace the washer, reinstall the stem, and give the packing nut a slight tightening.

The reason the noise would go away when the valve is off, is the washer is unable to move because it is squeezed against the seat. But, when the valve is open, it can vibrate and make the squealing sound.

It's a cheap fix, and worth a try.

 I'm with Ray. sounds like a valve is vibrating.

I'm no plumber, but if what they said don't work, install a new pig that don't squeal. I hear Eddie may still have one:D

I had a similar issue one time and found that it was the anti-siphon fitting on the outside valve (the kind that screws on to the hose bib). Replaced it and the noise went away.
