it is true squirrels will chew lead like it is candy, i had some lead stored outside that I use to caste bullets they eat it. and for some reason will bite clean through copper wire for what I do not know

We usually have enough outside cats to keep the squirrel population down. The cats must be getting lazy or the squirrels are getting tougher. It is about time for some thinning.

My sympathies, I've had much the same trouble only many times more. Squirrels have disabled my F150 three times, my AC on my Hyundai, and some wiring on my tractor. Overall I'd say they've cost me over $1500 in the last 2 years.

My wife and I just finished installing a 2 acre invisible fence so the dog can roam the area around the vehicles. I've tried everything to keep those devils at bay short of a new garage which I refuse to do because of tax implications.

Good luck, they'll probably be back.

We've got grey squirrels. They are nothing but fuzzy tailed rats. They chew on everything. We used to have some nice BIG shade trees. The squirrels would peel the bark off the upper branches and trunk where the bark was softer. That killed the top 1/3 or so of the trees. They chewed/scratched holes in my roof to hide kernels of corn. A few years ago I had surgery and couldn't work. I decided to eradicate the squirrels. I killed 32 of them. I thought I was really making a difference until I looked in my neighbor's yard and saw six of them running around. I found out later that a couple other neighbors were killing squirrels at the same time I was. In all we got over 80 of them that year. The next year it seemed we had more than ever. As it turns out a couple of neighbors are feeding them.

The problem with cats is that the coyotes eat them and then we don't have any cats any more. The coyotes don't seem to trouble the squirrels.

Coyotes eat squirrels, just not fast enough. The Fish and Game Dept. did a test in a neighboring county a few years ago. Had a 10 acre wooded track in the middle of a huge experimental farm... Almost a half a mile from other trees. It had oaks, hickories and lots of squirrels. They inventoried the squirrels and had hunters shoot half of them. The next year the population was back to the same level. Squirrels breed rapidly to balance any food supply. You can shoot them by the score and they'll repopulate. You have to find ways to block their damages... Or cut down their trees.

I caught a bunch of squirrels with a live trap and peanut butter sandwiches. Make a sandwich, tear off a few pieces to make a trail into the trap. I use a piece of crust with the peanut butter side down and stick it to the trip paddle in the middle of the cage. They work really hard to get the sandwich off the paddle and it trips the doors. Then a pellet gun and that is it for the squirrel. They come out in the morning between 8 and 10 a.m. and again between 4 and 6 p.m. around here. I set the trap now every time I see a squirrel and have the population under control.
Note: They cross the yard with donuts in their mouths from the gas station 1000 feet south of us. The other day we found a large piece of pizza in the Lilac bush. I spoke with the station thinking someone there was feeding the cute little things but they said not on purpose. The dumpster they use has holes in the top that the squirrels get through to get the donuts.

I once went to look at a basement re-flooring work, couldn't help but to notice at the bottom of all the windows were destroyed, They had been chewed to shreds, I ask the homeowner what happen? He told me that they went on a 10 day vacation and when they got back home they found a squirrel dead in the floor of their basement, assuming the squirrel somehow sneeked in while the door was left open before they locked up to leave, and must have driven the squirrel ( Nuts ):D He was trapped in and tried to chew it's way through the windows, must have starved to death or either choked on the splinters.... Yes! squirrels can destroy a house, ( on the flip side), Here at our place we have at least 20+ squirrels maybe more that hang around in the trees and on the lawn, drives our dogs crazy, But yet so far the squirrels have left the house alone, our dogs do more damage trying to get at the squirrels, .... Now that the leaves have all fallen I can locate about 15 nest in the tree's, the strange thing is I have 6 acres -2 in which are cleared thin of tree's and the other 4 all wooded, I can walk through the woods and not see a squirrel one, They seem to have chose to live among us hear in the clearing, Weird!
