I have built a stage for a music festival we are hosting in the near future. The floor is complete. I have included pictures to give you all an idea of what I have got done so far, but I am looking for ideas on putting a lean to tin roof down on top of this stage. I have ideas, but am interested in any ideas as this is the first stage I have ever built.

I would consider extending the roof on the roof and angling it down a bit to try to keep the rain from blowing in if it happens to rain. I'm not sure where I'd put the stage lights, but you need to plan for them, too. Some sort of back--even if it is a fireproof curtain, will dress it up a lot. Need to also consider running your electrical outlets and stage connections if you want to cut down on the number of cables running on the surface of the stage.

Looks like you used a lot of short joists for the floor which added to your labor on this project.

I probably needed to add more to this first post. I have plans on leaning the roof top. It's going to be tin.
All lumber with the exception of the 3/4"OCB plywood is pretty much rough cut lumber. All of which was on hand here at the farm and we're trying to keep expenses down. We already have about 6 grand going out to some of the bands, the electric company charged us $900 for a pole, etc., so cutting expenses was a thing to look at.
The joists are what they are basically. If I had longer boards I wouldn't have done it this way, but I am working with what I have. As I said it is solid as a rock. All posts are set in concrete. Three of the supports are 7"X8" solid pine, heavier than crap and stronger than crap too.
I have plans on putting bat and board for the backdrop of the stage(behind the drummer. On the outisde of this will be tin similar to what House of Blues uses on their buildings. We are trying to make this look like a farm type stage.
The electrician is taking care of all eletrical needs and a soundman will be onhand for that part.
I am sorry I didn't clarify this more, but I was wanting to know how some of you would put the roof support down. I have plenty of 2X6's over 20ft long and fairly straight, unlike this old rough saw wood. One of the reasons it is cut down in size was because it was warped or crooked as a dog's leg
Should I use screws or bolts? Would you use whole 2x6's or rip them for putting down the tin on? Would you put them on 16"OC or 2ftOC?

We have barns around here that have 2x2 boards that tin has been put down on and these barns are over 80 years old and still standing strong.

I am not sure what kind of music you are playing, but if it is amplified you do NOT want tin. While you can't do too much for outdoor acoustics, the tin will rattle and generally be a pita. I would go with Shingles if it is all to amplified... Also, any walls and flooring should be screwed down. Looks like the floor is braced enough for dancing..

It will be amplified. Mostly blues rock, jazz fusion, and one nationally known bluegrass act. I was initially concerned about the use of the tin too. I may have to talk to the promoter and see if we can skip this.
Do you think with what existing posts I have up I could get by with putting down shingles? It might be to big of a load for the 5 posts.
I am 260 and I can jump up and down on this floor and it doesn't budge at all. Main concern was we have on bass player in one of the groups that does more than his share of jumping around.

I think your floor is fine, for your roof, I cannot say, someone else here is way smarter than me. I would also screw as much down and not nail. Your are trying to prevent vibration, and a speaker on the floor will vibrate it like crazy...

As a Side note, I did a live TV New Years show in front of Ceasars Pallace in Las Vegas. Crazy, crazy show. One of the wild things was that we had the Rockettes dance. None of us thought this through. We were sure the stage would survive jumping up and down, what we did not realize is 100 girls and jumping up and down at the same time would make the stage jump up an down at the same time. Halfway through the routine, on live TV, the choreographer looses it and comes in yelling shut it down, we did, went to commercial and found the stage had move 6 inches...

Moral of the story for you, don't invite the Rockettes ;-)

I would use T&G boards on the roof, lay tarpaper and put the tine on top. I would also add as many 45 degree supports from the posts to the rafters/roof. If possible I would give generous overhang front and back: front overhang can incorporate lighting bar for spots, rear over hang can give protection for some gear. Again, I would beef up 45 degree supports angles connecting posts to roof. I would also use flat metal stock, drill and leg bolt roof to posts.

Good luck...

Who's the bluegrass band?

All the wood is screwed down I might add. The PA system will not be on the stage. It will be setup on the sides. We will of course have Marshall amps on stage for the guitarists. One band(Tommy Talton) has a keyboard player. Blueground Undergrass is the bluegrass band. Jimmy Hall of Wet Willie fame will be the main attraction. Other acts include members of the Derek Trucks Band(Yonrico Scott Band),Tommy Crain(Charlie Daniels) and Randall Bramblett(who has toured with the likes of Gregg Allman.

All the plywood is T&G and 3/4". I figure if we have to go theat route I might downsize to 1/4" plywood. I also plan on adding 45 degree supports to the posts. The backof the stage is going to be bat and board.

Have you considered using fabric? vinyl tarp etc..rather than a hard top?

I have found a tarp dealer online and the prices aren't that high for a canvas tarp, which might be the step we'll take. I am going to have to go over this with the promoter and my gf, who is the property owner to see what might be best for now. Thanks to all who replied.
