Stainless Appliance (stove) cleaners & stain shield??

Took us until now to afford/want stainless and granite, so figures it may be going out of style.... Last house was white appliances and formica tops.

I do think the stainless looks better, but you can't be picky about fingerprints or you'll lose your mind. As for granite, it's important to keep it sealed.

You should put in what you like and enjoy it. If you ever sell your house, whatever you pick will be "wrong" for some people. Granite and stainless is certainly not in the "that's weird" category that would be a turn-off.

We have slate counter tops. Slate won't stain, but it takes scratches (which tend to disappear), and chips on the edges fairly easily if you ding it with something solid accidentally. Slate can be filed and sanded by hand, if you want to smooth an edge chip for example.

WD-40 works well on stainless. Spray and wipe with the grain.

Yea, I know this is an old thread,, but, a few topics covered in this thread seemed to make it worth while to bring it back to the top,,

I would like to avoid stainless, but, cooking oil seems to be able to soften any type of paint, even powder coat,,
If you are gonna use a range hood,, and it is painted, the paint will eventually soften.
SO,, after about 4 or 5 painted range hoods, I opted to buy a stainless one this time.

The reason I found this thread,, is that after installing the stainless hood,, I did not seem to be able to clean the stainless ,, every treatment left streaks.

After trying a half dozen or so cleaners, the hood still looked streaked.
I found the lemon oil wood polish,, and tried that,, luckily I used a clean paper towel.
What I believe I found was that the new stainless hood was still covered with dirty oil from manufacturing the stainless steel.

In the end, I think what I found was that all of the prior cleaners were not able to remove whatever was on the hood.
The hood was streaked, because I was just pushing around the film, not removing it.

Maybe now,, I will be less afraid to buy stainless appliances.. I just got to do an initial clean, that is better than you would expect to need.

And,, as far a what has gone out of style,,
I do not think our granite counter top is out of style?
I KNOW that our 14 year old counter tops look as nice as the day we installed them.
I doubt that I would be saying that about Formica,, it would have shown wear.

The appliances are either stainless, black, or stainless/black mixed (the range)
The black and/or stainless does not seem to have gone out of style like avocado did,,,

I am not much for worrying as to what is in "style" ,, but if we had bought something horrible,, I would have replaced it.
( our previous fridge was "almond".. it is gone partially due to color, and partially do to the fact that it sucked LOTS of electricity)

So, what is your findings over the last 15 or 20 years??
Have any appliances gone out of style??

Appliances don't last long enough anymore for going out of style to ever have a chance of working.

IMO the best cleanser for SS is 'Barkeeper's Friend'...it's amazing...!

The problem with many of the newer "stainless" appliances is that they have a coating applied almost like a clear coat. Part of the reason is to protect the low quality stainless steel they use, because it rusts, pits, and stains easily if not protected. If you use abrasive or harsh cleaners, it can damage the finish.

I agree with Ford. I love Barkeeper's Friend, but I would never consider using it on the cheap stainless of the appliances. They don't even recommend using harsh paper towels to clean. They want a soft cloth used.

Best stuff I found was the proper stainless cleaner in a can. WD 40 also works. Not all stainless is the same.

I just love and will never tire of my old BROWN Kenmore Range! I would love a modern Fridge to match it! I have a stainless GE PROFILE Fridge. Nice Looking, except when covered in smudges, but a really SHEITY fridge for performance. Freezer useless, fridge not very cold, has like five fans running and barely shut off. OH and Noisy with all those fans!
