Stake Driver

How about a T-post driver. Basically a capped pipe with handles. It is better than a sledge as you don't have to lift your arms as high and you don't need good aim.

I use my neighbors but found this one on line with a search
Premier1Supplies - Steel T Post Driver

The search turned up a few hydraulic ones as well.

IV'E SEEN SITE CONTRACTORS WHO PLOW OUT BIG SHOPPING CENTERS STAKE-OUT THEIR PARKING LOTS W/ 4-5FT OAK STAKES. THEY USE A STEEL CLYNDER THAT LOOKS ABOUT 3-4" IN DIAMETER X 2 FT DEEP W/ WELDED CAP & ROD LOOP HANDLES. THEY SLAP THEM IN REAL QUICK!

I'll pass that link on to him also. I have one of them he can borrow if he wants to try it.

Would he need to use wooden stakes? For driveway markers in the winter I cut 20 foot lengths of rebar into 4 foot lengths and put a tennis ball on the top. They go in the ground far easier than wooden stakes. I have also used them to keep tomato cages upright.

I'll ask him about using rebar.

If he has a small tractor with a tph, build or buy a 750 lb weighted tp attachment, and attach a tube with a side entrance and a cap on it. Attach another tube that can be accessed from the tractor to the side entrance. Drop the stakes down the tube, and lower the tph. The weight will drive the stake into the ground. Raise the hitch, and move on to the next one.

I am pretty sure a tph will have the range of motion to drive the stakes, and move over them.

Now that is a great idea.

Does he tie the tomato vines to the stakes?? I want to grow tomatoes and am looking for a simple trellis system.

Thanks

 There's a little thinking outside of the box. That would probably work out very good.

I think that would require 2 people, right? One to put in the stakes and one to move the tractor forward. Or else he will be getting on and off the tractor a LOT of times. 3-5,000 stakes was the target. Now, if you did have two people, your idea does sound slick as can be.

Now if you made the 3pt attachment with a seat and a pole storage area so a person could ride on it and flip in the stakes, I bet you could do 5000 in a single day. And not break a sweat!
