Loyd, I don't think the ears are right for a Duck Toller. They do however match the ears for a fox.

TxDon,

Looks like a Chow/Shepherd mix. I have noticed many dogs like this (that belong to people) in my area. My guess is he is abandoned but you are way out in the country so he could be wild. There have been "packs" of dogs known to kill livestock around here. I've seen a "pack" on this side of Bryan Tx. about 15 years ago.

The head, ears and coat color look like a Pembroke Welsh Corgi. The coat is too long however and I could not determine its height. Might be a mix as the Corgis are only about 12" at the withers.

They are herding dogs, maybe it was trying to get you back in the corral.

Could it be a COYDOG?

Next time take a roast beef sandwich with you and see if you can coax him(or her) in a little closer:) I would also take a gun. A hungry dog that can be coaxed in with food can be given a home or returned to it's owner if you can identify it. If it can't be coaxed in with food and a calm friendly voice, that stalking behavior you described in the first post could also be interpreted as it sizing you up for a hunt. You turning on it made it's mind up that you were to big and agressive/aware to successfully take down. A child or pet walking the same path and unaware of the hunter might not fare so well.

This feral critter lived behind the barn for a just a couple of days with its brother and mother, then they all disappeared when momma noticed they had more curiosity than caution.

That's the brown ground cover lion-dog, a decendent of the Cowardly Lion from the Wizard of Oz. The Cowardly Lion had breed with Toto, hence the smaller size. Nice mane though.....

Looks like a chow crossed with something to me, like a german shepard or golden retreiver. (I'm a retired vet.)

I see lots of Chow in it too, crossed with who knows what. They can be a mean breed.

Day 2: Can he be tamed?

I put some dog food and some pieces of fat in a bucket to see if he would come back out of the woods. It is raining, and sure enough about 3 hours later he came to the bucket and just ate the fat and left. I did manage to get this zoomed picture from 50 yards away in the rain. The bucket is 10" high.
I had to enlarge the picture on the computer before I could really see him good.

He has white dots on his nose and white on his front feet, so he is a mix of something and something.

Because of IH344 we have named him OZZIE.
