We used straw as bedding for awhile until the horses convinced us they never intended to go in the stall. They stand or lay out in the paddock on the wood chips. We feed them in the stall so they're used to it, makes it easier to handle them if they need to be confined for any reason. But otherwise they have almost no interest in the stalls.

I remember your post from a while ago & adapted it to the barn I'm building. It's new so I got to skip the digging out step! I dug pits in the middle approx 12" x 3ft by 3 ft deep, connected the pits together with a trench & drain tile & filled the whole works in w/1/2" washed rock. Then spread & tamped 6 to 10" or dense grade crusned stone on top & plan to laydown mats (conveyor because that's what we have) & then bedding. The underdrainage & pits should take care of collecting any water or urine. Time will tell. I know it'll be better than bedding on top of clay that's for sure!
