For us, 90% of the ice use is to keep basic drinks cool (such as water or tea).

We use ice packs for coolers, but we done usually have a cooler full of bottles or cans.

Wife has some stone cube things for her bourbon.

Here is the small Frigidaire next to the 1995 Magic Chef side by side.

They've got to have LOTS of it. If there's not enough for a dozen people they are stressing. I can't get the youngest to drink water but she will eat ice all day. She will fill up a cup with just ice and gnaw on it until it's gone and go get more. They both want "Sonic ice", the little nuggets, but those machines are stupid expensive. I said no under counter ice maker in the new house because of the expense and since we will have a working ice maker in the fridge but I eventually relented. Because of a 4th of July sale, we were able to add the ice maker and still save a little money to boot, over what the quote earlier in the year was.

The other thing that my wife can't live without is an instant hot water dispenser on the kitchen sink. It's a small additional water spout on the sink connected to a small water heater that puts out just a few degrees shy of boiling water immediately. She uses it to make tea, hot chocolate etc. Also if you need to boil some water to cook something fast you can fill a small sauce pan from it and it will boil on the stove almost immediately. Somehow the water doesn't have the bad taste that hot water from the tap has, and it's also a lot hotter.

That's the first time I'd heard of stone cubes for bourbon. I actually like a little melted ice water in my Scotch so I'll pass on the stones. I have an ice tray that makes round ice balls about an inch in diameter that's kinda cool.

The cheap ones suck. Went thru 2 before i broke down and got a commercial version under cabinet unit. Mines maybe 6 years old now. Crystal clear ice cubes. Cost close to three grand now though. Mines made by Hoshizaki . For commercial kitchen. 55 pounds clear ice per day production. When i worked in the field for many years, lots of ice made summers manageable.20230809_113554.jpeg

I'm glad we don't need ice - water from our well is very cold year around and we quit the booze long time ago.

I fully understand why most people living in the south or those on municipal or city water want or need a good ice maker.

I forgot about the anemia thing. She has been treated for that in the past...

The child is weird. She chews everything. I joke that she's like a dog. We have had to have her front teeth fixed twice from trying to separate legos, told her the next time was going to be out of her bank account.
