Starlink

Daughters thinking of getting Starlink. I thought there was an app or similar that you could get to check for reception problems, trees or similar in the way, anyone know where it is? I looked but I'm either looking in the wrong spot or blind....possibly both LOL.

Google "Starlink app" and choose to your heart's delight.

The wife picked up mail and package delivery from USPS a few days ago and the mini was there. I set it on the pickup and ran an extension cord to it. 30' away from the house and the phone shows full signal just like the inside Starlink WiFi. Left it running to download the updates.

Also in the mail was our Xmas present to ourselves: a two camera WiFi security setup. With the replacement Gen3 Dishy we now have a usable signal at our gate 150' away. It actually goes a lot further than that.... It works like a champ but I have to make some kind of hood to cover the camera to keep moisture off the lens.

Update: The Gen3 WiFi reaches up and past through the window, outside equipment and the through the trees to over 110+ yards away with 2 bars for live video and sound. Really impressive.

Does the Gen 3 have the snow melt function for the dish?

BTW, I don't think there is an ethernet option for the Mini. Or is there? I was wondering because if my Gen3 hardware went down and I was running the Mini as the backup: I know I could power on the old Gen2 WiFi as a mesh repeater but I don't know if I could plug in the ethernet adapter for a wired connection (without the Dishy)?

Are you asking because you're considering between an ISP with fiber optic or going with Starlink? Or that you have an ISP connection already that is 4500 feet from where you want service?

For the former, Starlink is far, far cheaper and will provide excellent service as long as there is a clear view of the sky.

For the latter, look into "wireless bridge" devices. They are not that expensive and as long as you have clear line of sight between endpoints they can beam a wireless network several miles.
The local telephone, TV and internet provider has fiber optic installed along the public road. They provide the first 1,000 feet for free and then charge $1 per foot with installation included.
The land goes over a mountaintop and then down to the river's edge. I had some gravel put in the old farm road - that's why I know the distance.

Thanks for the input.

I don't doubt SpaceX will be huge )already is). Unfortunately the little guy can't get in until SpaceX goes public. Then it'll be much more difficult to make any money.
Do you say that because SpaceX is so widely known and successful prior to going public? I sure wish I had about $100 worth of Nvidia when it went public, that would be worth close to 500 thousand now.

So you'll be buying $100 of SpaceX then. :sneaky:

Any more hot tips?

Got our "free" Starlink Mini in the other day & got to play with it a bit today. Set it out on the back deck table & ran it from a 30v supply powered by a 30AH 12v Lifepo4 battery. (I took advantage of the nice weather to also test a new folding 100W solar panel).

I let it run for a bit, then did the setup. Took no time at all doing it from the phone. A firmware update was queued so I let that run.

It's on the $5/mo "standby" plan, but still has internet connectivity (at slow speed).

Slow speed, but better than 3 times the speed we considered "fast" dialup back in the dinosaur days. 1/2 price roaming plans are available for occasions when we might need to use it for more typical operations.

Also got a chance to check how well an Apache 3800 case (Harbor Freight) might do for portable use. I printed some clips & attached them to the underside of the case lid with 3M VHB tape.

It fits pretty well. Plenty of room left for the battery in the top pic plus extras. Once things are together I'll try out operation while inside the case.

I have a question , I have had starlink now for over a year and lately it is listing my location as Virginia even though I live in Pennsylvania. Is there any thing I can do to change my location.

Good luck, my location always comes up as NYC so any search is centered around that damned hole.

Sorry to say NO. Your location is dependent on which Starlink ground station you are connected to and where that ground station connects to the internet. I live in VA and my location has moved from GA to NY to VA to CA, presently it shows me in Ashburn VA.

I think what you mean to say is not "Starlink is listing my position as ..." but, rather, "Online services I interact with are interpreting my location as ...'

Some services, often streaming media services or shopping web sites, will try to interpret your physical location based on the IP you're connecting to the Internet with. In Starlink's situation, the ground station or datacenter where the sats you connect to actually interface with and connect to the Internet from may be dozens or hundreds of miles from your physical location. There is zero you can do about this. It is just the nature of the networking involved. This has been true with any ISP for a long time. I live in central MN but when I was using AT&T for Internet everything thought I was in Chicago.

Any service that enforces rules based on location, primarily streaming media services, typically has a method to verify your location in another way. For instance, with YouTube TV they will have you go to a web site on your phone and give your browser temporary phone location permission to verify where you're actually at. Contact those companies and ask for how to deal with the situation. For online shopping sites that try to find "closest store" I don't think there is any way to fix that.

Nice summary of the issue. I know where "my" Starlink ground stations are here in Northern California, but the outside point of presence is usually Los Angeles, but not always. As you write, it depends on routing.

I buy from a chain that defaults to believing I'm 3,000 miles away. It always makes me smile.

All the best,

Peter
