I did change the inner and outer filters. The inner looked clean, and nothing came out of it when I rapped on it. The outer filter was pretty dusty and a lot of it came loose when I rapped on it.
I also added a fuel injection cleaner additive to the tank.
It does smoke a lot less after the filter change.
I expect some smoke; it is a diesel afterall. It has always started on the first crank and runs perfectly.
