I am trying to find a starter for a Yanmar 2000. I have read where it is the same starter that is in a nissan 83 pickup, but the poster didnt put the engine size on his post. I also read where the starter is the Hitachi S104-114 but have been unable to locate one. Any help would be appreciated

Hoye, the sponsor of this forum has them! Most of these starters can be rebuilt if you take them your local rebuilder.

Why do you need a starter? If yours is rebuildable, you will be many $$$$ ahead to rebuild it.

I took it to one shop and they said it was in too bad of condition to rebuild. Most of the brass end of the armeture is destroyed, all of the brushes are gone and small pieces fell into the pasture when i took it off.

According to Hoye, it's a Hitachi S114-146, but I couldn't find one of those either.

I don't think you will, either. We looked many years ago, and finally gave up. Rebuilt is around 175 + core. New is double that and then some.

There's a Denso starter with good availability that will replace the OEM starter. My YM240 arrived (used) with one.

Look on ebay for 'Yanmar Starter' then look only at the 15-tooth starters.

Here's a link to a current auction: NEW JOHN DEERE TRACTOR STARTER THERMOKING YANMAR 90-502, Seller:dbelectrical

That seller has been auctioning them for a year or two so should have one in the future as well. They are expensive -this is a new one for $240. However rebuild kits are inexpensive.

He lists the following detail which might help you locate a used one:

Brand New John Deere - Thermoking Starter for Yanmar engines

Starter - Denso 1.4kw Series
12 Volt, CW, 15-Tooth Pinion

This Denso starter is original equipment on many applications with Yanmar engines. It is also a higher torque replacement for the Hitachi gear reduction starters.

Applications:
JOHN DEERE TRACTOR - 750, 850, 870, 955, 900HC, 970, 1070, 3325

THERMOKING - KDII30 MAX, KDII50 MAX, SSIV, TD-II30 MAX, TD-II30 MAX

Because the Denso starter also replaces the other models listed, would those other models also fit the Yanmar 2000?

I have been told the following starter is an exact replacement for the S114-146. I've never had a need so I can't vouch for the accuracy.

Available from NAPA under part number 91-25-1080 (Wilson Auto Electric), at a cost of approximately $180 (exchange).
