It has been miserably cold up here so i have given the ol tractor a rest I have the gear now and will be giving a shot at replacing just the gear when it starts to warm up. When your hands stick to the metal it is cold. A good lesson there -never put a cold screw in between your lips. Pretty much the same as sticking ypour toungue on a mailbox when its cold.

I just finished rebuilding the carb on an old M52 Onan in a Sears 917 something---Apparently a Canadian Model
Now my starter motor isn't engaging so I pulled the covers off to see the gear all chewed up. I ordered a new one ($125.00 Canadian) and am looking to find out if anyone has replaced the Bendix without pulling the flywheel off.
I don't have a puller and am hoping to be able to figure out how to get the gear off easily

I read through all of the posts and still don't understand why you think you need to remove the flywheel?

You should be able to push in on the bendix to move it away from the flywheel.

But even if it doesn't move, as several have said, just unbolt the starter.

The mounting bolts for the starter are behind the flywheel--or at least 2 of them are
There is 1.5 inches between the flywheel and the engine block so no room to get in there at all to remove the bolts. I have put a wrench on the back f the starter gear and a ratchet on the nut on the end of the starter shaft. The shaft turns until the gear engages the flywheel and then it feels like i am about to damage the shaft as it will not just break loose easily That is where i stopped i dont want to destroy the starter as is hard to get as a replacement. When the -37 degree weather breaks i will give this another shot.

It warmed up a bit so i did get the gear on the starter replaced without removing the starter. Pulling the starter out would have been a real chore . I loosened the mounting bolts a bit to get the gear off and to clear the flywheel. Now all i have to do is get it running 100% it is intermittently running good so now i have an additional problem with the backfiring and stalling.
Thanks to all who responded.
