Starter Motor Bendix

Now I see what your talking about, have you tried hitting the end gear on the starter with a hammer etc..
to push it back in or turning the flywheel to dislodge the gear.
Will the starter not come out with the gear in that position.

So can you remove the starter from the engine? My guess is the bendix is jammed in the extended position, possibly can't be fixed. BUT, it should come off the starter if you have it on the bench.
I would pull the starter, remove the nuts on the end of the starter shaft with a wind wrench, and see if the Bendix just slides off. For $125 I hope you got the whole drive, not just the gear.
On the bright side, the flywheel looks salvageable.

I was hoping to get the gear off the end of the starter motor without removing the flywheel. I dont have a puller so taking off the flywheel off is a pain. I thought that if i could take the nut off the end of the starter w
Nothing is jammed just a worn out gear. Believe it or not the gear is $125.00 all by itself.
Ebay had it for $80.00 US$ which is $100.00 canadian plus shipping which is another 30.00

When this happens to the Bendix on a Model A Ford I put the car in second gear and rock it from front to back... so far it has never failed...

Is there anyway for you to safely rotate/counter rotate the crank?

Looks like i am going to have to find a puller to borrow or rent , pull the flywheel and remove the starter motor
Anything on this old tractor cost serious coin so i want to be carefull not to break anything else

Engine turns over fine just worn out starer teeth not engaging to crank the flywheel anymore

Ken....
I doubt you have to pull the flywheel. you should be able to pull the starter off by its self. look closely but I am sure you can... you might need the assistance of a hammer to persuade movement.

by some chance can you post the part number of the part you received. looking at your picture on the left the gear is held on by a spring load you should be able to push in on the end and a pin similar to a roll pin can be pulled out and the gear assembly will come off be sure to look how the parts are lined up on the shaft there is a pattern to this. as stated before the starter can be removed without taking flywheel off i feel this has to be last extreme. also do you have the starter number for your tractor that will help alot in finding a picture of your starter

if you dont have the starter number please supply me with the engine serial number and all info on the tag especially if it has a number called 'SPEC NUMBER'
