Starter not engaging flywheel?

Sounds like possibly a faulty rebuilt starter also check the gear teeth.

Did you try shimming the starter slightly where it mounts onto the engine. This would stop any excessive and unnecessary engaging of the starter gear

Hi all...
Mounted the new starter but when i turn the key i get a loud noiuse as if the starte gear is not properly engaging th flywheel. There's only 2 bolts and there's not a lot of play so i don't see any way to adjust the starter position.

I took the starter off and remounted it and same thing.

I am guessing either the gears are not compatable, or i need to sync the two . Is there something i need to do??? i could try spinning the flywheel a little, but i don't want to keep messing with it if i don't know what i am doing. * sigh*

Thanks again!
Remove the starter and, using jumper cables, energize the starter to make certain the Bendix gear is thrust forward on the shaft. If the Bendix gear does is not thrust forward then you know your problem. However, if the gear does thrust forward and does not engage the flywheel when installed then I suspect you have the wrong gear on the starter. Having the original starter rebuilt by a reputable shop is a good suggestion.

I know you are not talking to me but I have never got a bad anything from Amazon.
I've had starter off of Amazon (smaller) for my Polaris Ranger that last two years, went back to OEM and now five years in and still no problem.

I agree original usually last better than aftermarket. I have caterpillars and their parts are 20 times higher. So I just hope for the best. Good luck with your starter!

I replaced the starter on my John Deere and found the flywheel gears / teeth on the tractor were impacted with dirt /dust. It was so deep and engrained that the starter gear could only engage about 1/2 the depth it should. I ended up gouging out impacted dirt with a sharp pick and screwdriver. I would clean a few teach then pry the flywheel ahead with a pry bar. Then clean the next few. It was a slow task but made a big difference on how the starter sounded and worked after the dentistry work was done.
