Like Gus, I collect the sticks around the yard and, with a few sheets of newspaper and a few sticks, the fire always starts. I use the "lean-to" method where I take a piece of firewood, put a few wads of newspaper next to it and lay the sticks over it. Hard to fail.
I have different approach for my stove in the shop. I buy pine shavings and fill a 5 gallon bucket. Then I pour between 1/2 gallon and 1 gallon of used oil and mix it up. When I want to start the firef I throw in a few handfuls of the shavings and some wood and light it. Instant fire.
