Starting a tractor by spinning the PTO

PTO on the 3710 HST has an override ratchet. If you turn the tractor off without disengaging the PTO and there is an implement with flywheel energy, still turning, the ratchet just slips. The guy said he did try to jump start the machine so the starter or solenoid was junk. I was impressed his assistant knew what to do........ and executed well. That stunt would be a lot more difficult to pull off in the winter......

That dude is the most clean cut and well spoken redneck I have seen.

'Round here, rednecks dont start new tractors with Honda Accords. They would be using the '78 chevy with a wooden flatbed, and the tractor is a '70's (more or less, cause nobody remembers exactly when pappy bought it) Massey Ferguson or Ford.

As long as the strap doesn't hang up on the PTO, you're set... if it does, then the PTO will likely pull the rusty what's-left-of-a-bumper off your '78 chevy.

If I tried that, with my luck, I would rip the brushcutter of the back of the tractor.

Not something I will ever do, but good to know.
That was not a true "redneck" . His stunt was not preceded by "hey guys, watch this".

No "hold my beer" either.

Interesting to me. I would have never thought of doing this. Having started lots of old stuff by popping the clutch while pullling or pushing I could do this if i really needed to. The one thing I would have to do different is have my lovely assistant in the "pull" rig. She much prefers to be in the running vehicle.
I don't see the huge danger here, (but then I only have one eye since the time I was starting my old chain saw with my belt).

A way back when.....I had a 55 VW and the starter failed. It was a little while before I had enough cash to replace the starter. By jacking up one side of the car, ignition on, into 3rd gear and firmly gripping and spinning the rear wheel, you could get started if you had to park on flat ground. Biggest worry was remembering to put it out of gear before you dropped it off the jack.

Pretty resourceful. I dig it.

Not the preferred method but I did not see much that was horrifyingly unsafe.
