My 3320 eHydro starts with me off the seat while standing alongside the tractor. I have read more than a few threads about folks who have been killed or badly hurt with a gear-tranny startup while standing alongside the tractor (and having the tractor in gear).

QUESTION: Is there SUPPOSED to be a switch on the 3320 eHydro to prevent startup of my tractor while I'm not in the seat?

I'm always carefull when I (infrequently) do this type of start....but it still concerns me as being wrong. My PTO switch is functional. My range selector can be in any position (some of the newer models need to be in nuetral). Any downside to this type of start with an eHydro?

I can't speak to how your JD should operate, but I can tell you that my Kioti would also start without a weight in the seat. The range selector must be in Neutral to start and of course the PTO switch must be off, but that is the only safety switch. But if the range selector is in neutral, and the park brake is set, there is not much danger of the tractor running over you. If the brake was not set, of course it could roll, but it also could roll away just setting there if it was not level ground.

That's the way it's supposed to operate.... The range selector doesn't have to be in neutral either. (mine is a 2012 4720). I like the way it operates. The seat switch is still active on mine, it won't move unless you are on the seat. Maybe test that out on yours, incase the dealer had it jumpered for setup.

MY 755 can be started off the seat, but it has a switch to detect if the hydro pedals are pressed. This way the tractor can never be started unless the pedals are in their "neutral" position. I don't know for sure, but would think that may be a standard feature on JD hydros.

My Kubota B26 starts from the ground & in gear as long as the hydro-pedal is in neutral position which I like. I can raise and lower the FEL or back hoe from the ground which is especially useful when changing buckets.
The one dangerous thing to watch out is that is will also move a bit prior to the seat safety switch killing it so it isnt an instant kill. One could run himself over by pressing on the go-pedal while standing on the ground. Again, I dont know if it i designed that way or not, but it is kind of handy when unhooking the backhoe to drive it forward a foot or so to unhook the hoses without having to mount the tractor. As long as you are aware of the issue, it is not a safety issue for me any way. With the hydro drive, you can inch along slow and no danger of getting run over.

My brother in law's NH has to be in neutral, PTO disengaged, go pedals exactly neutral to start. What a PIA especially if the engine stalls. He stalled it once when punching up some burning brush piles. I thought he was going to burn the tires before he got all the safeties in place to start it back up. With no clutch, when it stalls it has so much pressure on the gear shift that it is hard to shift.

My 755 cannot be moved while off the tractor. It has a mechanical rod under the seat that locks out any movement of the hydro pedals without weight on the seat to push down on that rod.

My JD 3720 works like yours. I find it handy. I can start the tractor standing beside it and in gear, put a hand on the seat and then push the forward pedal down to move the tractor a little bit. It is probably not the safest thing to do it works for small advances in the tractor. :ashamed:

This is how it is designed to work. You shouldn't be able to advance either forward or reverse without being in the seat. Also should not be able to use the PTO unless you are in the seat.

I have wondered how I would operate a PTO driven chipper (or another attachment) from off the tractor seat. So far, i haven't had the need to do so. My PTO will not work unless I am on the seat. I can start the engine standing next to the tractor in neutral, but not the PTO. I have a new 4105.
