Two of my JD's have the factory ether starting system on them. Used in moderation and as directed it does no harm. One tractor has over 9,500 hours on it and lord knows how many cases of ether through it.

As an alternate to ether we use to wrap a rag wet with gasoline around the air intake. The knocks weren't nearly as severe. This was primarily with Cat equipment several years ago. No glow plugs.

This method can also be used when trying to prime a stubborn fuel system and helps to save the battery.
