gsganzer,
With so much our local housing stock built in the 30's-60's there is a lot of "two wire w/out ground" cable around here. I personally recommend replacing it, if at all possible, but there are ways around it too which will make things almost as safe as replacing the wiring. Feel free to e-mail me anytime by adding @yahoo.com to my screen name. Not prepared to get into any arguments here with any members /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif .

I could, and I'm sure everyone that has done a remodel, write a book on just the unforseen obstacles!!!

Never seen two wire w/o ground? Hate to hear what they'd say if they saw the wiring in the last rental I bought, ceramic insulators with wires ran separatly, it was crazy /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

funny jeff I was thinking about knob and wire elcetric when I read the original. And let me tell ya the insolation after 50+ yrs is thin enough to bite ya thru... Found some in an old house attic. The place was ALL 2"Tongue and GRove inside and out. the roof the walls the floor the attic floor (orginal cieling). And still solid as a rock or OAK.. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif I still think my partner was just waiting for me to stumble into it. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif
Before he warned me it was still hot... /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

I'm in agreement with Cowboydoc, I don't envy you. In mid 2002 my wife's brother and I began adding a 1450 square foot addition to our existing 900 square foot two bedroom, one bath 1 1/2 story house. We did everything from pouring the footings to hanging the kitchen cabinets. Only thing we contracted out was excavating the hole (550 yards) and having new 200 amp electrical service buried underground. 2 1/2 years later, and I am still working on finishing off the other half of the new basement. Had I been a TBN member sooner I would have had PLENTY to say about adding on...and not much of it would have been positive.

I think the only ones that get the positive are the wives!!!! I know I was just happy with our house the way it was. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Here's some more photo's. Of course I had to get a photo of the "toy". The skid steer with the jackhammer looked like it would be a blast to play with (for about 20 minutes or until your fillings shook loose).

Here's one with the slab all gone and a rough grade. We've had rain for the past week, so no finish grade, forms or concrete work planned yet.

I'm always amazed at how nice a flat empty piece of dirt looks when it's all cleaned up.

We've had better weather the past two weeks. Here's a photo of them laying rebar. I was mistaken on the slab being a "post-tension", it's a little difficult to do post-tension on a tie-in slab. I don't think there's any shortage of re-bar or beams on this slab.
