Starting to disk and reclaim old cutover.

hello all -

i am about to drag a boxblade w/ the teeth down over the front of the drumchopped area of my property. After i drag that for a while, i am going to disc up the place a good bit - my question is..........

i bought the 'joy of gardening' book and have been reading it in the evenings. GREAT book. He has a section on buckwheat. Should i plant this seed and let it grow to 'shade out' the native stuff there, so i can plant grass/clover seed eventually. He makes it sound like a quick way to choke out what's there, and once disked in a couple times, the soil would be better for it? any advice would be appreciated - thanks.

You might want to try scraping them up into a pile to get some earth before you drop the tines down.

How big is your property? Is it chopped enough to allow a safe prescribed burn? Prescribed burning it would clean it up a lot quicker (the logging debris) than you disking it. It would also promote grass growth more than shrubby brush. Contact your local forestry department for contacts on installing a safe fire line and certified prescribed burning contractors.

Buckwheat will work for you but make sure you plow in under before it goes to seed.

Work up your ground and add lots of nitrogen to compensate for the wood chips. If you have deer there should be no problem worrying about buckwheat going to seed.

Winter rye also makes for a good cover crop.
