Static electricity and plastic fuel drums

This is an old thread.

But for your situation look up grounding for boat fuel tanks. You need an electrical conductor contact from the fuel nossel to the fuel fuel inlet to ground.

A few weeks ago,while driving by a local gas station, I spotted a Toyota Preus, with a small Harbor Freight trailer, it had an aluminum truck fuel tank strapped to it with two 1" rachet straps. He was filling it with gas what a sight, I should have went back and took a picture.

I bet he got a LOT of miles to the fillup!

Old story from the '70's gas crisis:
College kid on a Honda 50cc motorcycle pulls up to a stoplight. Up on his right a big Caddy pulls up. Guy in the Caddy leans out his window and asks the kid "How many miles does that get to the tank?"
Kid answers back - "Oh, about 300 miles per tank"

We had a thread on plastic diesel fuel drums last week. A question comes to mind: is static electricity a concern with the plastic (HDPE) drums?

1*Not for me .

Never use any un-approved container to store or transport fuel.
It's not worth the risk, to me, to use some old plastic barrel that I found, for fuel.
Tried it once.
I posted the results before.
2*Barrel got hot one day, expanded so much that I couldn't get the cap off to relieve the pressure.
Had to cool off the barrel with water hose.
Drained the barrel, rinsed,
3*cut the top off and used it for a trash can.

2*That's why I have vents on mine.
3*You could use it as a 1 time burning barrel

Also, on the diesel issue, you can extinguish a match in a container of diesel. Trust me, I have tried it !!

So, I've done it with gasoline.

When they fuel up ships down here here at the dock with bunker fuel, you can bet your bippy there's a grounding cable.
