Steel Buildings

Morton may be the best - maybe, but in my case I can put up 3 buildings for what they are charging compared to a local builder - and the local builder will put up what I want. Morton wants to put up something different but still the same size.

I'd go local!

NOT TRUE!
Morton will custom design absolutely any style/shape building that you might want.
I know a guy with a Morton built house!

Thanks for all of the Morton comments.

I hope to have them build me a Barndominium.

I have no experience with them, but Morton does seem to be the standard that others compare to. Kind of like Honda small engines or Kubota tractors.

You also pay more for that, but in the end, having it done well is always worth paying more for in my opinion.

I've built a few pole barns and have tried a few different suppliers in my area. Muellers is the one that I like the best, they have very good metal for barns and buildings with excellent salespeople to talk to when figuring out what you need and explaining what options are available.

I would be very cautious about buying from a national supply chain. You never know where the metal is from until it arrives at your place, and you never know how good they will stand behind what you bought if you have any problems. And every build will have it's own, unique challenges to overcome. How well that is accomplished will decide how much you enjoy or hate the build.

Since you do not know who to hire, or where to go, it might be a good use of your time to drive around and look for newer built barns and shops in your area, and talk to the owner of those buildings to see if they will recommend a builder or supplier. I've done this for concrete, HVAC, Plumbing and roofing contractors, and it's amazing how many I learned about that nobody would recommend!!!!

I have 3 Morton buildings with the oldest being 38 years old. Just had the roof repainted 2 years ago, rest still looks fine. My first building, 54 X 90, only had enough scrap after building to fill a wheelbarrow. Built 2nd in 2002 and before I built the 3rd in 2005 I went around and checked out other builder's buildings. Rubbed my hand on the steel siding and my hand would be the same color as the building. You can rub on mine all day and no color comes off in your hand. Plus the steel is much thicker.

If you build a Morton with large doors in the gable ends instead of the side, and eliminate extras such as cupolas and porches, they are very competitive. My buildings look far better than other buildings in the area the same age or newer.

Also the very large local garage door installer has told me numerous times that Morton is by far the best pole barns to install garage doors in as far as being square and prepped right.

I had this 40' X 60' Red Iron Building put up in 2015 for a total cost including concrete for $40,000.
The manufacturer- Vulcan | Steel Structures
I went through a sales office in Jacksonville Fl.
The assembly crew from Ga. came from assembling a very large building 60' X 120' in Louisiana.
It should have taken them 3 days to assemble but took a week BUT it rained everyday.
My building is Perfect! They did an excellent job.
There are 2 companies in Adel Ga. that manufacture the buildings and sell them wholesale to companies around the country.

Thanks for all the advice.

Eddie does have a good suggestion. There is, for lack of a better description, a barndominium development that I drive by most every day and I'll be stopping by to speak to the owners when I can. I think there is about 8 buildings there right now, and probably half are Morton Buildings.

I've also been researching pole barns and stick built buildings. When I use the "design and build" facility on the big box lumber store websites, the cost of materials for pole barns and stick built are not that different. That surprised me. I'm guessing that a stick built building is more expensive since it requires more labor to put up?

Before you build a barndomium, do a search on resale. They don't seem to sell well if/when you decide to move. There are 2 or 3 in areas we were researching and all of them had been on the market for a long time. If you don't plan to ever move, go for it!

Not building a barndominium. I was just commenting that the development might be a place I can get input on post frame builders.
