steel i beam ?

It would be great to find "left over" steel, but when you price steel, you might find out how pricey it is and how unlikely you can find people to give it away. That would be great, but the stuff is too valuable to just leave laying around.

I bought two 8', 1500 lb test, 5" beams last summer to shore up basement wall and I paid over $600 for them. Local steel supply. ALRO or something like that.

I live just north of you in Lexington and I go to Davis supply on Bringle ferry road just west of Salisbury. Their nunber is in the book. HTH, later, Nat

I was a buyer for Duke Power (pre-Progress Energy) a few years back for the nuclear power plants. We found steel all around Charlotte, however we were a big buyer so they catered to our needs.

Check the scrap yards and salvage yards first. We have a railroad salvage yard here where I found two nice pieces of steel.

Check with some local misc. building supply people. i bought a 50ft 33lb/ft beam from one of those guys and he delivered it with a 10ton dump . Wish I would have had pictures of that one.

I'd go with the advice above and check with local scrap metal dealers first. They might be nice enough to give you other leads as well. The scrap places around here sell stuff about 10 cents on the dollar but doesn't keep the nicer stuff for long. Things like 20 ft I-beams don't fit into their scrap bins very well so they get resold to another business around here that sells stuff for 20 cents on the dollar. Still way cheaper than buying new as long as you don't mind a few misc holes and such in places.

What did you end up with, and at what price?

More than $1 per pound?

Thanks,
