I bought one from harbor freight about three years ago still
works ok on my wheel horse for about $4.00. I just bought a heavy duty one for my 790 Deere at the JD dealer about $10.00.

jray,

Any tractor dealer close to you should have those spinners in stock. I put one on my tractor and although it definitely wasn't necessary - I love that thing. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

All,
I thought about this the last time I was using the tractor.....

At what point do you attach it?? 12:00? Does it matter?

Dumb question probably.....

If the steering on your tractor is as loose as mine is it doesn't matter /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

(Mine is at 9 o'clock because that leaves my right hand free to operate the FEL)

I put mine on the left hand side of the steering wheel (like 9:00) since I need my right hand free to operate the position control or the loader control.

See this post about my experience with the spinner and trying to put it at 6 oclock. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Both of mine are at about 7:30 /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif. Like Tdenny said, that leaves the right hand for FEL and 3PH operation. At that location, it is not so far away from the right hand. There are times like on a sidehill or when I want to look around to the left that I steer right-handed.

My in-laws had a Nasty Ferguson (265 or something) that didn't have a direct mechanical connection between the steering wheel and the steering linkage. It was annoying to have the location of the knob constantly change while operating the tractor.

My one tractor doesn't have power steering, and a couple weeks ago the left front tire hit something it couldn't roll over. I didn't have a good grip on the spinner (aka "suicide knob") and in about .3 nanoseconds it whipped around and smacked my hand pretty hard..................chim

I have mine positioned at 10:00 so I can use my right hand for the lift control. My tractor doesn't have power steering either, so it only takes abot 83 turns of the steering wheel to mow around a tree. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

jray, when you get your spinner check-out the weld of the spinner post on the underside of the top bracket. My spinner of 12 years started pinching parts of my palm when the post got wobblely. I took it off the steering wheel expecting the bearings to have gone bad. Actually the spot weld had given away and the whole vertical part was flopping around. I had brought a replacement and that spot weld was pretty wimpy looking. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif So I MIG rewelded the old one and returned the replacement. My repair has to be several magnitude stronger than the factory spot-weld. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Becareful with the spinner knobs! Years ago I was mowing high weeds and brush when my right front tire hit a hidden tree stump. This caused the steering wheel (no power steering on a B8200) to spin rapidly to the right. The spinner knob caught the back of my right hand and broke a bone. Really a painful drive back to the house. I never used a spinner again!

Picture of the tractor supply $3.99 unit.........I'll never touch the steering wheel again !!!!!!!!!! My tractor has hydrostat steering.........the knob changes position somewhat but it's yet to be a problem..........TOM

Bag that $3.99 model.... they are usually stamped on the mounting bracket and break easily.

My $3.99 special lasted a month or so. A neighbor welded it and it made too this spring!! Opted for the TSC $10.99 aluminum with ball bearings. Much better and much smoother.

As far as mounting it, I located my on the wheel but with the bracket spanning over one of the steering wheel spokes. Like others have mentioned, the position changes with the power steering, so it really doesn't matter where you mount it. As long as it's secure, that's all that matters.

I buy the $3.99 knobs by the case from TSC (MGR gives me 10% off) and use them on the reconditioned forklifts I sell...................I've yet to have one break..............I used to get some red wooden ones from NAPA but they went to a china model and IT BREAKS like you discribe. I'm using the plastic models on both my tractors now with no problems........but all the machines I use them on have power steering...........TOM

hey thanks everyone for the reply. I found one at Harbor Frieght $2.99 works alright for now. I mounted it at about 10:00 and it sure does make a difference when turning. The spinner isn't that well made but at $ 3.00 plus I had it that day it was worth it. Out here we don't have any TSC and our local Big R doesn't carry them. Any thanks alot
