Purchased my 1630 in 1998. Steering shock went bad in about 2002-2003? Lived with the floppy wheel for a while. Replaced it 2004. Was going to adjust the wheel yesterday, and it just stayed loose again and is flopping up and down.

Why does New Holland keep putting out garbage that they know does not last? This has been a constant problem with the mid size TC series and yet no concrete solution is available that I am aware of.

My solution will be to make the steering wheel solid in an acceptable position. However this will have to wait until late fall when I have more time to design and make the bracket.

End of rant.

There were a few members here that purchased inexpensive shocks at eBay and then adapted them for their column need.

Dave, I may be able to help you with the steering wheel lock, but I doubt NH will do anything until a class action suit sets them back on their heels.

My tilt lock started flopping loose just like yours. I noticed the lever was also flopping loose, and on closer inspection, the tiny pin that goes down into the shock was stuck down. I had no fluid leak, it was just stuck. So I took everything apart and put some PB Blaster around the pin. I kept working at the pin by gently prying upwards and it moved back into position. A lot more lube and working and it began to work as good as new.

I sprayed some marine lithium grease around the pin and fabricated a cover with some rigid plastic to keep moisture out of the area. Since that time (about 2 years ago) I've had no problems whatsoever. The height adjustment doesn't work, but I couldn't care less about that. The tilt is about all I use.

Taking everything apart is the toughest job. I think it took me about 1-1/2 hours to get it apart and back together, and I was familiar with how to take the cowlings off. I hope you don't have to replace your shock. As long as you haven't lost the fluid inside, I think you have a chance of getting it fixed without replacement.:)
