I am thinking of getting a steiger panther to work on as a hobby and toy. Yes, i am serious. I wouoldnt do all the hard stuff myself (not that strong and i model so need all my appendages) but to me that tractor is like WOW: burt reynolds, brad pitt, and clooney all wrapped up in a massive spine tingling package!! I would probably just tool around on my 25 acres and pull logs and stuff. Do u think i could get one needing work (not too much work) for under say 15k ??? And was this considered to be a well made tractor?

Warm regards,
Danica

This much about 'em....No one bought one WITHOUT having plenty of hard work in store for it. That is a big honkin' tractor even by todays standards.

And yes, they were considered one of the best high hp 4wds ever.

Resale on older 4wd articulates can be cheap hp. You might find one under 15K but keep in mind the cost of moving it from point A to point B can be very pricey. They won't quite fit in the bed of a pick-em-up truck!

Why do I picture a new reality series? "Danica's Panther" comes to mind every wednesday on Discovery.

I have thought about the same thing as you but the cost to repair these tractors can add up very quickly and you also need a lot of big tools/equipment to be able to handle the repairs. They are cheap horse power but their not cheap to run as they drink fuel pretty heavy compared to what you would be use to with your current tractor. If you did do a restoration you can always make it into a Pink Panther.

My neighbor uses a Steiger Super Wildcat with a Cat 3160 diesel under the hood to work about 200 acres of hay towing a 15 ft offset disk.

That old tractor seems to work fine.

I've seen similar tractors like the Versatile 500 sell at auction for $10K or so.

There's a 1982 Panther on eBay right now with $24.5K BIN. It looks pretty clean.

My guess is that a $15K Panther would be more of a fixer upper. I'd hate to tackle a job like that. I'm restoring a 1951 Minneapolis Moline BF tractor (25 hp) and have spent $1600 on an engine rebuild. Repairing or (gasp) rebuilding a 100+ hp diesel would be really big bucks.

I admire your pluck. Good luck.

Keep on eye out on Craigslist (use crazedlist.org : search craigslist like a madman) and be patient. You will be surprised how often deals come up. A few years ago, my brother picked up a nice hillside combine (for harvesting wheat) for $700. It ran perfect and has not needed hardly any maintenance. A farmer was retiring and the equipment had been sitting for a year..

Super good points. One problem is that where i am in the catskills there ia no nees for a big tractor like that. And as someone else said, it is huge...not gonna fit on my pickup!! Still i just love that tractor. I guess sometimes size does matter!! .:)

There are a lot of Steigers on this side of NY between Lake Erie and Syracuse. I don't travel to the other side of Syracuse to know whats out there but I would imagine you can find one at the bottom of the hill you live on and just drive it home

Another possible option might be the Ford FW series. They were rebadged Steigers, but with different engine (***-apart V8?). Oft times I see these repowered with a straight 6 Cat or Cummins. Here's one that's a touch above your budget:
1982 Ford FW 60 Tractors | HOPF EQUIPMENT, INC. HUNTINGBURG, IN #50365

Here's the current (08/23/11 9:00 EDT) listing from fastline for Steiger. There's a few toward the bottom that fit your budget:

If the main thing is having a big 4WD and a Versatile would suffice, then here's a couple 500s that should be within your budget:
