( I also think there's a very strong advantage to haveing her shoot the same caliber as I am. If we're out hunting together, we can have the same setups with the same ammo and everything is interchangable.

She's already shot the rifle, so I know she can handle the recoil, so it's just a matter of getting her familiar with it enough to be comfortable and confident on her own.

Since you mentioned that, maybe you should look into another with a muzzle brake on it.. Makes a huge difference.. I have a freind that recomended a different type of recoil pad as well(dont remember the name, but decelerator comes to mind) that helps dramaticly.. As long as she isnt intimidated by it, I think the brake(or a good porting job) would do the trick.. As a matter of fact, it might be a good idea before she tries punching paper with yours.. Its gonna kick alot more than she remembers.. I have a Savage 30-06, and wouldnt trade that gun for anything.. Its cheap so I dont mind if I neglect it a bit but they dont come much better, especially with the new accu-trigger.. But it will kick to the point of leaving a mark after a day at the range.. Just an idea... I like your train of thought there.. Personally, I tend to buy different calibers, just because... I really dont have a reason other than to have them... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I'll second the .243

Ended up getting on efor my dad who's pushing his mid-70's, after lugging around a .30-06 most of his life, he can't beleive the weight difference and the fun of taking it (.243) out to the range to sight it in.

A "trick" which I'm sure you may be aware of when teaching someone to deal with recoil is to have you load the rifle for the person and give it to them to shoot. When you do this, turn you back so they can't see you load the rifle. One shot at a time, but sometimes, actually don't load the rifle and still give it to the person. This way, they are never sure if there is a round in the firearm before they shoot. When they shoot, watch the barrel and stock to see how bad they may be flinching. The person shooting as well can see how they react when they think they are discharging a "loaded" gun.

Eddie,
That's a great story and congratulations to Steph...What a gal! Nice pictures you took too. I'd look into a .308 with a muzzle brake (to reduce recoil if needed), but still have the 30 cal. bullet. I think your BDL can be had with that cartridge and you'd have matching guns.
Again, great story.

.243 would be a great choice. I have an old Remington 660 in 6mm Rem. It has a short 20" barrel and is a great all around deer gun for sitting in a stand or walking. Very efficient gun.

My Dad has a Remington 700 chambered for .250 Savage and it is a sweet little gun. I've shot several deer with it all with great results.

Both rounds are similar in size and performance and would work well on medium hogs out to 100 yards or so with proper bullets.

Oh, and congrats to Steph. She looks to be very happy. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

For what its worth, I used to hunt hogs with a guide who used a .243. He didn't seem to have any problem putting them down. His wife, who might have weighed 100 lb., used her grandfather's .30-30, which was so old the buttplate had been replaced with a piece of an old tire, tread & all.

I watched her take 5 pigs with 5 shots while standing in the back of a pickup truck, all in about 10 seconds. No, it wasn't moving.

I have taken 6 with a knife and shot a few others, but the knife is more exciting.

Eddie, you sure do know how to get everyone's attention around here. Beautiful girl, gun, and the kill. Show one of her with all that in front of the dozer or tractor and look out brother.

I've got friends up in Carthage that will actually video tape some of their hog hunts with the dogs wearing kevlar vests.

I know what you mean about some of the dialects around that part of the state. I'll sometime stay several words behind trying to figure out what they just said.

Well, CurlyDave, I guess we know why you are called Curly ! If I had hair it would be curly too after taking 6 hogs with a knife... you must really know how to sharpen a knife, considering how tough hog hide is. You do give them a sporting chance!

I've shot numerous deer and javelina with my grandfather's 30-30, Savage model 99. Six shells in a rotary magazine and so heavy you don't even feel it kick, open sights.... It does a magnificent job given decent bullet placement.

Let's let Steph get a little more experience before she graduates to close hand combat with a hog /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

The old farmer I worked with cutting and baling hay once told me about his experience with this. He said his ag teacher in high school had told him that it was best to kill hogs by cutting their throats, instead of shooting them or knocking them in the head first and then cutting their throats. So when he and his dad had some hogs to butcher, his dad shot the first one, and he told his dad what the ag teacher had said. He said when it was time to kill the next one, his dad handed him the knife and told him to do it. He said after that bloody escapade, he never "corrected" anything his dad did or told him to do from then on. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif And that was with domestic hogs.

I can't imagine trying to kill a p_ssed off 400 lb hog with a knife. Especially if it had 4" long fangs. As Ted Nugent would say: " it is an experience that will clense the soul".
