Steph kills HOG number FOUR!!!!

I wish I could bring my wife down. Her and Steph could do a job on those hogs. My wife would do a little different though; she is a sure shot with her Hawken. A .50 cal 375gr Maxi ball in front of 100-120gr of FFg would make dinner outa any hog within 150 yards...

'Course, as mentioned in previous threads, I wish I was closer, cause some of that hog cooked up in a Dutch oven by a campfire would be mighty fine ;)

Nice hog, and nice shootin!

I'm kinda jealous ;)

Murph,

Your right, she does enjoy shooting them hogs, but I enjoy it more then she does. Her exitement fuels mine!!!

Sorry you can't make it here for the get together. We'd all really enjoy meeting you.

Vernon,

She's shooting my Remington 700 BDL rifle in .30-06 with Timney trigger and Hogue stock. The scope is an older Redfield 5 star that I'd like to replace one day, but after 20 years, it's still working just fine. Ammo is Federal Premium with 165 grain Sierra boattails soft points. It's a deadly combination that shoots one inch groups at 100 yards.

I've shot half inch groups a few times when I was reloading and using 130 Grain Hornandy boattails and IMR powder, but those bullets didn't perform very well.

deere,

I'm very proud of her and her ability to shoot. I tought her to shoot with my .22 when we were dating and was really impressed with how quickly she picked it up. She has total concentration and control. She's also a better shot then I am.

George,

Nice hog!!! It's very rare for our hogs to have any tusks at all, so this hog is extremely rare at 2 1/2 inches. Your's looks like he has some nice tusks on him!!! Her hog looks like he's shorter and thicker then yours, but I'd say they weight about the same. I work out all the time and have a fair idea of what things weight. It's not accurate, but close enough for estimating, and I'm thinking her hog was around 250.

The picture below is of me struggling to get him upright for pictures. Look close at my face and you'll know why she took that picture of me. :D

Scotty,

Thanks. We didn't plan on shooting him, but the oportunity presented itself and went for it. Flip flops and all!!!!

Redbug,

Thanks for the link. We live in what we consider perfect hog habitat. It's extremly thick jungle with lots of water and feed for them. There are hundreds and hundreds of acres all around me that are totally wild and just about impossible to get through.

They are pretty hairy, but the differences between them is pretty extreme. Some have almost no hair, while others have more then you'd think possible.

Ductape,

That's too funny that you call your wife, "whats her name" hahaha

My ex was the same way. She didn't want anything to do with the outdoors, shooting or hunting. Steph had never done any of this before we met, but now she's my best friend and hunting partner. It just wouldn't be as much fun to outdoors without her!!! :)

The missing foot is a mystery. Nothing obvious from looking at it. It's a clean cut right at the bottom of the bone. It's been that way for a very long time, so anything is possible.

Jim,

Thanks. We were hiding in front of the dozer, trying to figure out how to get a good rest for the shot when she thought about using the tracks. It never occured to me, but as you can see in the picture, it really is a good rest to shoot from. Each of her four hogs have been one shot kills, and I credit that to her skill and not shooting until she has a solid rest.

Robert,

We'd love to have you guys come by for a visit. Bring the Hawkin and lets see what it can do!!!! I've done some black powder shooting and was OK at 100 yards. I shot iron sights and after 100 yards, I can't see the target clear enough to shoot much farther then that.

Seriously, if you can get away in the fall, it should be allot of fun to meet everyone at the get together we're having here.

Pappy,

He's already butchered, but these old boars are not near as tastey as a nice tender 50 pounder. The backstraps are good but the rest is mostly stew meat and give away. Steph's Dad is the leader of an Explorer group and they like to cook it on there weekend camping trips. The kids just eat it up, so most of it went to them.

Archerynut,

Thank you. He's in the 250 pound range. That's pretty big for here, but also an honest weight. We've alreay had people we know tell us that he's bigger then some 300 pound hogs they have shot from looking at the pictures, but I have allot of doubts about some weights people claim on there hogs. I've sort of found that Hog hunters are worse then fishermen in estimating how big they are. I've had them get darn right upset when hanging a hog on a scale and it's a hundred pounds less then they said it was!!!

They don't get much bigger then this in our part of the country.

Eric,

Dressing a hog, or any other animal, is just a term for gutting and skinning them before butchering.

Eddie

Redbug, I used to hunt some on the Congaree. My great Uncle was Smiley Burnsides. He and his family used to own a huge tract down there. Been years since I've been in there hunting. My Dad hunted there constantly with Uncle Smiley back in the 50's. I think Green Hill and Big Lake were the names of two of the tracts. Nearly virgin swampland practically in the middle of downtown Columbia. When Dad was a boy they had imported Russian boar stock. They hunted them with dogs. Dad killed several pushing 500 pounds. Black as soot and I still have the tusks, some of them close to 5 inches. Last time I was in there was with a guy named Davies Merry. He sold me my log cabin kit (Southland Log Homes) and he took me there to show me a similar cabin they used as their hunt camp.

There are a number of different hog types in SC. Down in Charleston, at least when I was a boy hunting on the plantations along the Ashley river, the hogs were reddish with coarse, medium length hair. They rarely got over 200 pounds and were generally very thin. They were as wary and wild as any deer.

The first hogs we got near my property in Farifield County were of recent feral stock. They looked like domestic pigs. Big, fat, huge hams, huge shoulders, round backs, short finer hair, short tusks. Not very wary and fairly easy to kill. You can still see spots on some of them. But lately some son-of-gun idiots have been catching wilder stock from other areas and releasing them here. These probably have some Russian stock and have been wild a long time. The one in my picture is that kind. Huge heads, big shoulders, razor backs, little hams, coarse, long black hair, big tusks. They are very wary and have the best noses I've ever seen. I watched a little one coming toward me some hundred yards away. Got a whiff of me and vanished. No snorting around and stomping like a deer. Just gone.

I also shoot Remington 700s. Maybe the least glamorous guns on the planet, but accurate right out of the box with some of the best fall times and accuracy out of the box than anything on the market. I've got a 270, 30-06 and 308. All more accurate than me. I love a fine, pretty gun, but when it comes time to grub around in the woods an ugly old 700 in a fiberglass stock is hard to beat. The one in the picture has a stock spray painted green with automotive paint! Ugly as sin.

In any case, the folks on the property next door set up some huge traps and had great success and we haven't seen any hog sign in a month or two. They might be fun to hunt but they take too much of a toll on the property and run the other game off too. Glad their gone, sure they'll be back.

Eddie,
You guys have way too much fun! And that is one hairy beast.
So I guess for your photo album on a couple of those pics it will read:
'Beauty and the Beast' ;~)
Sorry, I couldn't resist.
Looks like a great argument for gun control though:
Hit what you aim at!
(I too am feeling the pains of others in not being able to make to your shin-dig in the fall...hope you have a great time though.)

idebe.

"Beauty and the Beast" sounds great. I'm one of those guys who thinks of those witty comebacks about a week later. Now I wish I'd have thought of that, it would have fit perfectly!!!

Who knows, maybe things will change by fall and you'll be able to make it. We'll have to come up with a date sometime over the summer, but as of right now, it's still pretty vague when the get together is gonna be.

schmism,

He's a little on the tough side. LOL We only kept about twenty pounds of meat and gave away the rest. Those old boars take allot to make them worth eating, and some cuts are just not worth the effort. Of course, with enough seasoning, just about anything is edible. hahaha

We left the guts, hide, head and bones where he fell. This morning I shot a coyote. We've been seeing them come out to eat, but they take off almost as soon as we open the door. This morning, he paused.

The last hog gave me one coyote and one wild dog. Hopefully this one will bring in more coyotes and wild dogs.
