Steve Irwin was killed this morning while filming a documentary on the Great Barrier Reef. Fox News reports that he was stung by a stingray. Paramedics were flown to his location but it said that he died from a stingray barb to the heart.

Wow! I was just sitting here watching the early morning news and the story came on. Tragic..... :(

Yeah, very sad. Apparently the sting ray barb actually hit his heart and is big and sharp enough to have been the equivalent of a knife wound to the heart. Not much you can do about that even if you are in a hospital when it happens. Given his risk taking, I always figured he'd slip up and a croc would get him someday. Sting Rays are not aggressive so he must have just stepped on one unless he was provoking it. Apparently fatal sting ray injuries are extremely rare.

He did an awful lot for conservation and he did it in a way that was really exciting and entertaining. I'll miss him.

I saw a guy step on a small ray while vacationing on the Outer Banks, this poor bugger was in agony. It didn't make any sense taking one in the chest. I'm like the other poster figuring he'd end up getting it by the giant croc or something. At least he went out doing what he liked. He was fully aware of the risks he was taking, I feel for his family.

I was stung in the foot by a ray off the coast of San Diego, it felt like I had stepped on a nail, except that it went into the side of my foot. The treatment was almost as painful as the sting,(sticking my foot in water as hot as I could stand it to draw the poison back out) but was necessary to keep from further damage by the poison. Straight to the heart, there'd be no way to help, just like a knife or a bullet - you're done.

He was a great conservationist and I'm sorry to see him go, even tho I thought the things he did were nuts!
