Three weeks ago, I had a similar choice to make concerning the auto or manuel. The dealer had a great deal on an 08 Dodge quad cab with the manuel 6spd with the 6.7 CTD. I could have gotten it for $32,300. I loved the 6spd, but I opted for an auto 07 with the 5.9 CTD since it didn't have all othe pollution control. I have been reading about numerous problems the the regen. on the 6.7 CTD, so I made my decision based on the engine, but given the choice, I would have went with the manual.

I just converted my 1996 Dodge Ram 3500 CTD 2WD over from an automatic to a manual.

Having said that, I would probably get an automatic, even though I really like shifting. The older I get, (me too, 60!) reliability becomes the most importatn issue...

I currently drive a '00 4x4 F250SD v10 with a stick (373 gears). Ordered it new that way. Love it. For me, and the kind of loads I haul and tow, the stick fits well. Just last night I ordered a 4x4 F350SD V10 with a stick (410 gears) to replace it with. The new one will be a 6 speed, so that will be something new for me. My dealer won't stock any manual tranny trucks.
I've had lots of trucks thru the years. Fords and Dodges. Never owned a GM product (nothing against GM) . About half were auto tranny's. I never liked that they always seemed to shift at the wrong time on hills and long pulls. I had to rebuild the auto tranny on one. I've never had to touch any of my manual trannys. Oh, and my wife drives our truck with our 30' 5ver behind it with no problem.
I guess the moral of the story is whatever works for you is right.

I got a 48re in my 06 cummins love it.. the most probs people have with auto's is that they add all the horsepower goods to the motor and dont beaf up the trans.. I got a chip,intake, and exhaust and I bought the truck with a banks conveter shifts great love it so far no complaints and tons of power...
