I bought a used 009 at a garage sale in 1990, ran great and worked well for my 24 years of using it. In 2014, it would only run on choke, local dealer said case seal is bad, sucking air, too expensive to rebuild. He sold me a 017, which I am not fond of after 2 years of use. Anyone know a Master Stihl mechanic, or someone who specializes in 009 rebuilds that I could send it to? Would love to have this 009 running again. Thanks. Philip.

What's your budget? You could probably do it yourself. Otherwise, a rebuild by a "master" is gonna run you $150-250 plus parts. If I were you, I'd sign up on arboristsite and or opeforum and post a wanted ad for a good running 009. You'll probably get one for around $150 and then you'll have your old saw for parts.

Otherwise, to do it yourself, do a vacuum test and find out if the case is really leaking. A carb kit may be all that's needed.

Also have a 009.
Nice light weight and I can use it one handed.
An arborist had it B4 me but gave up his fleet as they were not anti vibration and OSHA fined him.
Paid a mere $40. and it has never failed me in 20 years. Always starts 2nd pull.
(also have a big Husky for serious work)

I would prefer someone else with experience to do this work. My budget? No issue spending $200 for a good rebuild of my old saw. I may sign up on the sights you recommend and post same as I did here. Thanks. Philip

Not too difficult to pop your motor out and pop in an ebay import motor for $200 but a
Nice used saw seems like the best avenue.

Was there any damage to the piston and cylinder from the bad crank seal?
