Stihl Chain Saws

We sell Stihl and Husquvarna,we work on the rest! I do recommend the pro saws for longevity and performance. The engines are just built better!

I only recommend the premium gas and you should keep it in the shade and as cool as possible. No the fridge is for refreshments not the gas. They do evaporate and the lower the grade gas the faster. Mine goes thru the winter but not the summer! I leave it in the engine and tanks! I do use stabil in sleds and winter operation equipment during the summer and it works great! Don't be shy!

What ever, don't push an empty tank of fuel on a two stroke!!!!! That will give you a lean condition at near or full throttle and cause cylinder scuffing!!!!!

I do prefer the Stihl over the Husquvarna saw for overall longevity and for the most part it is because of the above! We have far more older Stihls out still cutting then Husky's.

A chain should only have enough room to stick a dime under one link when tight! That is with a clean bar!!!! You will never toss one if it is that tight! I do recommend a good chain, a good chain with proper care will not normally clog air cleaners! You should be putting off chips not dust!!!!!!

Be sure that the chain and bar is right for the saw if going into a hardware store! Chances are you will know more about it then the clerk will!

Go to a knowledgeable dealer for the saw and buy quality Just once!

That's if you can!

I do like smaller bars on saws then what max's recommended length. If a saw is recommended as a 16 to 20" bar buy it at 16" and you will never run out of power when cutting with a full bar! You won;t have to try and hold the saw up when cutting!

For the original poster, go back to your dealer with the saw! He should have someone there to help you better understand your saw.

I have a Stihl 230c that I bought last year. It's my first saw so I can't say that's it's better than any other. I bought it because the dealer is close to my house and new I would be using it a lot, and I have! It has been run 40-50 hours a month and I'm already on my 3rd bar. This saw has been through **** and back and it just keeps on going. I loved it so much that when it was time to buy a 3 blad brush cutter I bought another Stihl.

Well, not to be argumentative....cause that would be juevenile;) , but manufacturers spend a lot of marketing and engineering time to make their product look like its in a different 'class'. Its a lot easier to be 'best in class' when there is no one else in your class.

I'd contend that if it had the same HP, target market (i.e. homeowner) and the same size bar....that's close enough.

But, my point was just that all arguing aside, some brands are, in fact, better than others....even when the products are in the same class.

So how about a modern Homey for a modern Stihl? I know where I can pick up a modern Homey pretty cheap.

One brand better than another? How long do you think the poorer brand would be on the market? Again _ equivalent_ equipment.

You need to get specific. Same market? Pro/homeowner? Same size?

If you are talking the cheap saws you see in the big box stores etc. I don't consider any of them worth the money but then I use mine heavy. They might be fine for occasional use but not for me.

I don't know of any homeys other than the cheap throwaways in the big box stores. Last decent homey was back in the late 70s with the 3xx, 4xx and bigger. They didnt' build any pro or big saws after that AFAIK.
