So I have a scored piston on my MS250. I posted about this several months ago and the consensus was it was shot. I bought a MS261 to replace it. I would like to fix the MS250 as a backup. It looks like you can buy and entire short block for about $40 on Amazon. Is this fairly easy to take apart and replace? Is this stuff off Amazon good enough for my intended use?

Have heard "some" of the chinese ones are not consistent in the manufacture and castings of the bargain kits and some reports of the Nikasil wearing out or pealing to.

I used a Meteor piston and Caber ring kit-on my Husky.

From what I can find Meteor is made in Italy and is of OEM quality and Caber is an OEM provider for some brands. Very happy with it's performance. Price was in between The lowest price ones and factory part offerings.

If your Stihl saws factory Jug is not scored, i would suggest getting a Meteor piston and ring set plus gaskets.

If the cylinder is scored the Hiway kits seem to be well reviewed for a not to expensive an aftermarket kit.

Not sure what a new Stihl jug and piston go for.

I say Go for rebuilding the saw for sure, kind of fun rebuilding them once the parts are cleaned up.

Not much to lose even with a bargain Kit.

I found a couple of videos. It looks like most likely I just need a piston and rings. It looks like I am not the first to have the problem. Still not sure what caused it but I might find it when I take it apart.

Make sure the clamshell bottom end is sealed up good with no air leaks. A pressure/vacuum test will check for leaks.

I got it apart, needs an entire new engine assembly. I hoped it would just be the piston but the cylinder is scratched just as bad as the piston. The pic is the exhaust side, the intake side looks brand new. The top ring is frozen to.

No I do not. Possibilities are no oil in gas, I do not think so. Bad gas, possible, not enough octane. Run to hard with a dull chain, most likely in my mind, my 23 year old son used it quite a bit over a period of a few days or I did it myself.

It has been that way for a few years. It still worked when cutting, it just would not idle well.
