When I first started shaving, I bought a little box of "Itsapeech" styptic powder from my barber. It was a little round wooden box, maybe as big around as a half dollar and a half to three-quarter inch deep. I just stopped and checked online and found one::shocked:

Anyway, it was a yellow powder and you could just touch a dry finger to it, then touch a spot that was bleeding and it stopped the bleeding instantly. I once even found when I bit my tongue enough to make it bleed, it worked great for that, too. Of course that little box lasted for many, many years, but when I finally went looking for another one, couldn't find one anywhere. I was told that it was so good it could stop bleeding where stitches were needed so the FDA made them take it off the market. I don't know whether that was true or not.

What was the powdery stuff the medics would sprinkle on wounds in 'Nam? Was it the same stuff.

When I was in college, I went camping with a buddy who managed to put a decent cut into his pinkey - story for another day....

A week later, he was having a bit of trouble with infection. After going through some basic OTC ointment he went digging around at his parents place and found a tin of anti-biotic powder. I was over there when he was telling me how well this stuff worked. His mom got a funny look on her face, and said "What Tin ?".

Turns out the product was still kicking around from when the "kids" were born - it was about as old as my buddy !

Products that work Too Well, sometimes get pulled just for that reason alone.....

Thanks for the link Bird, and history ! That page has other listings showing what appear to be new tubes of powder. Kept dry, I'm thinking powders are possibly more long term stable..... :scratchchin:

One thing I've used for decdes is COMFEY powder.
Amazon.com: Frontier Comfrey Root Powder Bulk, CERTIFIED ORGANIC, 1 lb: Health & Personal Care
I learned about ir when a girl used in in teh 60's on her boyfriend who took all the skin off his arm by a MC crash - road rash. I used it on an exact cut 1) I went to emergency and had stitches, it got infected, left a scar, and took weeks to heal. Same cut I used COMFREY root, never got infected no stitched no scar and healed in a week.

Comfrey contains a special substance called allantoin, which is a cell proliferative. In other words, it makes cells grow faster.

Dr. H.E. Kirschner, M.D., author of Nature's Healing Grasses (available on Amazon.com), describes one of his most interesting cases involving comfrey: "A middle-aged woman came to me with a large malignant ulcer below the eye and close to the nose. I prescribed a comfrey poultice and a "green drink" containing comfrey leaves. Soon after the application of the comfrey leaf poultice, the painful swelling subsided and rapid improvement was noted. Only a few months after the initial treatment, there was complete healing of the infected area, and the malignant ulcer had disappeared."

Thanks Cat !

I know how nasty road rash can be.... I'd buy it (knock wood) just for that. I know allantoin from some other product, but I can't remember what at the moment.

One of the nice things about many natural products is that they don't have the collateral effects that some man-made solutions do.

This discussion is reminding me of how much I wish I could still have a chat with one of my grandmothers, as she was well regarded as a back-woods healer.

That was a disinfectant mixed with a pain killer.. Super glue was to act as an emergency stitch until base hospital. It wasn't the same super glue you see now because you needed acetone to release the skin bond. Hospitals and Vets use a form of it today..

Walmart has recently started selling the stiptic pens. They are like 97 cents or something like that. Picked one up not to long ago when I saw them. Lost the one I had many years ago. I don't think the new ones work quite as well as my old one did, but it does work. I think the name of the powder we had when I was in the military was called quick clot if I remember correctly.
