Stock Pileing Sand....

I live in NH, and many of the townships here do have piles of salted sand outside the town "sheds" and maintenance areas for residents to use. I have always kept a couple of plastic garbage barrels full of that stuff, topping it off when necessary and it has worked well for me. Right around the steps of the house, etc. I use an ice melt that doesn't track in too bad.

For the tricky spots on my lane I have a few 55 gal drums with ash from the wood stove strategically placed, but I want to use the sand for 50 yards or so around the house, so we don't track all that crap into the house.

I do something similiar. I use coal ashes for the rear driveway & the path up to the rear door. Around the front of the house where company generally walks I use ice melt. The coal ash makes a mess in the house so we take off our shoes when going inside if we walk through it. If you know someone who uses coal to heat their house, get ashes from them. In the middle of winter they're usually glad to get rid of them & you can get them for free. I store the coal ashes in the shed in 5 gallon buckets &/or a 55 gallon drum. The downside to coal ashes is that they are very dusty/dirty.

Honestly, I use ash more than I use sand.
