Yup....you would be in jail for..... assault & battery?....murder?
Is the loss of any type of machinery/equipment really worth years in jail?
Maybe for you!
Not for me!

Sounds like a self defense case to me... hey the guy came at me! So i pushed him back away from me and his face hit the concrete floor 50 or 60 times... odd how that can happen ;)

Building a carport accomplishes... what? Unless you never take the tractor out to use it, people will still know what you have. The owner in question had cameras... a lot of good they did. I make it as hard as possible to steal what I have but none of it is worth going to jail. Unless you threaten me or try to harm my dog, I will take as many pictures as I can (while carrying my good friend Ruger.357) and wait for the calvary.

For me its; #1 protection of equipment from weather and #2 Keeping equipment out of sight. Still don't understand why people leave thousands of dollars in machines laying out in pastures collecting rust. See it all the time in my area of the country. I like the idea of the kill switch and burnt fuse in place of a good one.
If my stuff gets stolen, well at least I can go to the insurance company with the thought that I tried.

Reading all these posts makes me so glad I live where I do...can't remember the last time I bothered to lock the door to the house or garage.

Hey, these guys came prepared.
They had a 'tilt and load' probably filling an order.
Mud on the plates, wearing hoodies and in and out in 10 mins.
Nothing would have stopped them. Not GPS or locked doors.
They had also stolen a trailer and a flatbed trailer but abandoned them after unloading the excavator at a truck stop.
The feeling is that they feared there was a GPS on board the stolen truck, and besides their order did not include a truck.
Now comes the insurance hassles.

Of course you can’t win against every thief but a few single precautions will eliminate the non professional. And I disagree about the locked doors part. We don’t know for sure how he was targeted but more than likely they saw it sitting driving by.

I agree about keeping it out of the weather (I finally started building my shed today) but unless you never use it, people are going to know that you have a tractor.
Otherwise you can simply park it in back of your house if you don't want people to see it.

I feel the same way. Generally the only time that my trucks are locked is during hunting season, because there are guns in it.
The only other times are when I'm at my mother's house down in "civilization", or when I'm in a Walmart parking lot.

My sister used to say that despite my observations that she had a lot to lose and to be careless with as little as a key and lock was not a good idea. But she persisted. Well, until a burglar figured it out and hit them in a big way. Now she's gone the other way and locks everything all the time.

1. I live a long way from a public road so no one can case the place by driving by and no way for anyone to know if there is someone at home. Long private driveway with No Trespassing and Beware of Dogs sign. Therefore...

2. If someone intent on stealing does show up at the homestead (and no one is home), locks won't make the slightest difference.

Other than the fact you have put this on a public forum and your insurance company may not pay due to not locking your doors...but hey, you do you.
