My guess is they were going for the trailer and anything inside it was just a bonus.

Trailer theft is on the rise... several friends/vendors... often hoping tools inside easier to take trailer and sort later...

Should be easy to track it since they have to blast the steam whistle at every intersection.

A friend who has a landscaping business had his trailer stolen, nice trailer filled with equipment including a small Massey Ferguson compact tractor w/backhoe. Finally police found trailer (damaged), everything pawned pennies on the dollar.
His insurance company paid him the depreciation value of everything. So it cost him $50K, he received $6K.
Perps caught...they had nothing, needed drug money. Judge gave them slap on wrist.

Sort of reminds me of that movie with Burt Lancaster and Kirk Douglas while that song is playing "Is that tough enough" when they stole a train and took it south of the border.
