Off and on for the last 4 years I have been consulting for a direct mail house. They process lists given to them by direct mailers and do the addressing and actual mailing. They do such things as clean lists to make sure the address exists by using postal service certified route data, NCOA lists, geo-code lists, etc.

Only the very largest of the bulk mailers (those on the national level) belong to the Direct Marketing Association (DMA). I would guess that 95%-99% of your junk mail comes from non-members.

Paying DMA $5 to have your name removed from their member's lists is throwing away money. Your best option is to opt out from the individual mailer when the option is available.

Direct mailers get your name and address from many sources. There is no way to totally prevent, or even put a dent in the amount of junk mail you receive.

Junk mail keeps the post office in business.

When I had a wood stove, I enjoyed junk mail and looked forward to every piece. It was free kindling.

Either burn the stuff in the wood stove or use the "no postage necessary" envelope that is usually enclosed to send all of their junk back to them postage free. That way the post office is supported twice which will hopefully keep the 1st class postage down a bit. Since I work for FedEx and we haul most of the mail for the post office, it helps my pay check indirectly!!!

I wonder what those "No Postage Necessary" envelopes cost the companies now-a-days. I was working as a postal clerk when postage stamps went from 4 cents to 5 cents and one of my jobs was adding those up and billing the companies for them. They were called "penalty" mail back then and the company paid the regular 5 cents postage plus 2 cents for each one.
