Yes its the older "almost 3#" size can-and I believe the chain is 5/16.
By the way-HF has cheap end hooks for 1/4" and for 3/8" chains, but not for the 5/16" truckers chains I almost always find at garage sales.
Painting the ends sounds like a great idea-I typicly spend more time searching for chains when I set them aside then I do working.
