They are predicting a major winter storm for our area. 1/2" of ice followed by an accumulation of snow. It's going to have to warm up to rain, as the temp has been in the teens. This is supposed to start in the AM of the 25th. If you live in a surrounding state from my area, you might check on your provisions to make sure you can get by comfortably without power for a few days. Don't mind the snow, but I sure can do without the ice. Looks like some tractor work is upcoming!

Ice, hmmmm it could be a lot worse. Think of those commercial pilots dealing with wing ice. Now that gives me the shivers. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Dozernut, I am not too far from you (south central Indiana)...and the sound of ice coming isn't too good. I decided I'd bettter restock my firewood this afternoon before the ice comes. I have some new chains for the front of the tractor....may try putting them on. Was hoping to try them on snow only though...not ice. Seems like the forecast keeps changing...for the worse. We'll see what happens.

Storm coming?

Bring it on....... Plenty of wood for the burner and oil for the lamps if the power goes out.

I try to be ready for "out of the ordinary".

Keep plenty of coffee on hand and always keep a couple of weeks supply of beer on hand.

Actually a good storm can be good for you. I quit smoking during a blizzard one year long ago.

I did however start again after it was over. Then I got tired of waitng for another blizzard so I could quit again so I just quit during a heat wave.

Enjoy the storm. You cannot do anything about it. It is Mother Nature reminding us who the boss is.

I took this picture right before dark last night. We got 3 inches of snow, then 1 inch of sleet/ice on top of that. The Charlotte area and points east and south got very little snow and about 1 1/2 inches of sleet/ice.
This morning, the roads were frozen solid...what a drive in to work!
They're calling for more ice/freezing rain today....1/4 to 1/2 of ice on everything.
The last time that happened (Dec 2002), 3 out of evry 4 people lost power for several days due to trees and lines down.
I'd much rather have the snow than the ice....

fivestring,

The Triangle got about two inches of snow and ice. The roads
have a good inch or more of solid ice but nothing in the trees
and on the powerlines. Supposed to get up to 1/4 inch of ice
this afternoon or tonight. We dodged the ice Sunday, hopefully
we can dodge the message again tonight.

I am ALMOST finished cleaning up from the ice strom of
12/2002. I still have some downed trees and three burn piles
to fire up. So I suppose its time for another ice storm to keep
me busy for another couple of years.... /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I sure hope we dodge this mess. This time next year we should
have the house built and while we are more likely to loose
power we will have a generator for backup, a big wood stove
for heat and a much more energy efficient house.

Sure hope the storm misses us again....

Later,
Dan

Oh Ya, One more very important thing to keep stockpiled.

Toilet paper.

All is right in this household if there is plenty of paper products available.

Another storm is coming tonight. Goody........

The biggest problem is no water to flush the toilets!!
Don't know if my generator is big enough to power the well pump.

Around here, the weatherman only has to mention the word "flurries" and there is a mad rush on the grocery stores. People wandering through the stores mumbling "milk and bread" over and over to themselves. Nothing else, just milk and bread. I have yet to fully understand this behavior /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif.

We always keep about 10 gallons of bottled water handy in the winter months and I also have a 55 gallon poly drum of well water in our basement for flushing toilets using the bucket method. Our well quit about ten years ago and I had never considered about how to flush the toilets with no water.

Live and learn. I've got a good size genset and could pump water using it but unless the power is off for days it's not worth the bother to us.

Apparently, that's a contagious condition, since it occurs here as well. As soon as the news mentions a couple inches of snow, the stores sell out these provisions in no time. Honestly, I've lived here all me life (39 yrs.) and have yet to be "stranded" for more than three days. I guess some people just HAVE to have fresh milk and bread. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Storms here.... Mother Nature is doing a fine job. Kind of blowing horizontal.

They say it's snowing but I just think it's stuff that was once on the ground at Dozernuts house.

Kind of like leaves in the fall. Where did they go? They ain't here no more. Must all be in Ohio or PA.

Nine inches of new snow around here today with a wind chill of about ten above zero, drifting like heck. It always drifts at our place cuz we are on top of a hill facing open farmland on 3 sides. Forecast calls for more snow tomorrow, gotta go stock up on milk and bread first thing in the morning.... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Don't know about the bread, but if you get snow you got to have milk to make snowcream /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I heard that there is going to be a shortage and that you should buy up as much as you think that you will need for the next six months.. This is a serious problem......
