Storm Shelter

[Redneck in training]

My house has large garage so I am working on a storm shelter achored to the floor in one of the corners. The structure will be welded from 2"X2" square profiles and covered with 1/4 inch thick welded on steel panels. It will have somewhat triangular shape that I think is harder to crash than square shape. I am considering insulating it from outside and cover it with clear cedar GT boards inside and use it as a sauna.

After a tornado took out our town a couple years ago, 2 shipping containers where set on top of the ground, covered with dirt, concrete poured on top, and planted grass on dirt. It just made them into large mounds. The authorities in charge said they would withstand a large twister. Here is a pic of one being covered by dirt. This was at the mobile home village set up for survivors.

I was contracted to dig the hole and backfill it. I believe the total cost for the customer was 5,600.00. This was the larger of the 2 shelters offered (7'W x 10'L x 6'2" tall) and came with emergency lighting and a couple other options.

I would think water mangement would be one of your primary concerns. We haven't had any hurricaine force winds here in thelast few years but we have had them turn into to tropical storms and come and dump water. We've had up to 8 inches in a couple of hours. All of the sudden everything is flooding.
