Any guesses why the steel wheels on the modern tractor?

I drove my 1929 McCormack 22-36 a few blocks on a paved street. It had steel wheels with solid rubber bolted around the permeter. Rode like a TANK. It was terrible. Can't imagine operating one of those with no suspension from the tires.

I can remember from many years ago where steel wheels replaced the rubber on some WD9's. This was for breaking recently cleared bush land. No flat tires.

I would guess it's because they wear out slowly and because anyone with a welder and some scrap can fix the tire.

Steel wheels on a modern tractor. Maybe someone has pulled my leg, but I have heard that steel wheel on tractors today has something to do with religion, Amish-Mennonite???

That kind of looks like the bad guys "Spider Like" machine in the movie verson of "Wild Wild West".
