strengthening tie rods

I straightened my rod several times after I bent it the first time. Easier to bend each time. I took it to a shop and had them cut the end off and weld it to a new rod so it's now like new. they threaded the other end so it would screw into the adjuster. It cost me forty dollars.

Some manufacturers still have the drag links below the axle on the tractors they are producing. Most new designs have them above so this does not normally happen.

Very true art . I'm referring to the ones that are situated in back of the front axle.

My dad bent the tie rod on his old 47 International truck. He pounded it straight and welded an angle iron to it. It only lasted until the engine seized up some 35 years later.

I had the same problem with my 76 International Scout. Solved it the same way...... Engine still turns over though.....body is gone.

Hehe we used to joke that that old K5 had 2 different rotations of the pistons. They would go around with the crankshaft of course. But these were so worn out that the pistons would rotate which cylinder they came back down into. :laughing:

Folks, there is a reason that the tie rod is designed to be weak link in the front end. Think about it, as soon as you strengthen the tie rod, what do you suppose will be the next weakest link to bend or break???? Probably something that will cost more to repair than a tie rod.

I too bent the tie rod on my JD 790 running into a small stump. My good friend who is a master mechanic just happened to come by the next day. I was commenting on just how vunerable the location of the tie rod was and I thought it could be beefed up to resist future damage. He urged me not to do it. As stated above if you made the tie rod damage proof something else has to give. Maybe something more expensive. Would some kind of skid plate like off roaders use work? I think those big skidders loggers use also have skid plates on their undersides.
