Yes the pre existing condition probably was I was a male in my upper 50's then 60's which is probably high risk. I would have taken the risk and gone without health insurance during the 7 year gap between 58 and 65 and paid for visits and any procedures cash out of pocket IF I could pay the hugely discounted amount that Medicare, Medicaid, or insurance would pay.
As I say people with good insurance really have a leg up on the rest of us.
This has been an eye opener for me today.

It's only a "popular ploy" if those people are actually employees. You are implying that it is something illegal and it is not.

If they are truly independent contractors, that is a completely above board, and entirely in keeping with what our free market system is all about.

It is completely legal to be an independent contractor. And completely legal for a business to hire an independent contractor to do a job for them. The difference can look like not much difference at all, but it is a real difference in that everyone knows, understands, and agrees to the way the job and compensation works.

That is basic to having a freedom to choose how you want to work.

Yeah, I think some people are quite confused about the whole employee/contractor thing.

Yes, cancellation is real - although it may be camouflaged as something else. I've wondered if the "pre-existing condition" could be as simple as not having any health related insurance claims for so long that statistically a person is likely to have one in the next few years. That sounds so strange that it might even be true.

Or a small specialty insurance company may be forced to expand their pool of insured to include people they wouldn't normally cover. They can then either price themselves out of the market or shut down their insurance business.

I don't know what the answer is.
As I get older I try to tell people about the problems in the system we have, and I see people like you doing the same. And of course I remember being younger and hearing the same thing from my elders. But I didn't pay attention. I thought someone would fix it if it was really a problem, and oldsters complain about too many things anyway.
Some people are so invested into believing in the system that exists that they somehow want to believe its flaws won't apply to them.
Or they argue that the system is regulated to prevent inequities from happening - ignoring what happens when regulatory commissioners take the side of the insurance agencies.

Like I said, I don't know the answers. But big changes are needed.

History shows that those that do all the right things often have similar outcomes as those who don't when it comes to insurance because government covers the shortfall...

Fires, Floods, Earthquakes, Tornados, etc...

Health Insurance really is no different...

I started paying my own Prudent Buyer health insurance at age 18... It was not an optional as laid out by my parents... started at $48 a month and it took one weekend of my weekend job to cover it... paid into it 15 years until I went to work where benefits offered...

Not a single claim in 14 years. At one time I wanted to upgrade and was told I had insufficient medical records and would have to pay for a full physical and blood work to be considered...

I guess having no claims was a red flag?

Covered California is suppose to cover everyone and I know families that pay nothing but if I sell Real Estate I'm slapped with a tax for insurance???

Can't take credit... just fortunate plus having RN for a mom...

Never had my blood drawn until my hospital changed ownership and then it was extensive on-boarding process taking 6 weeks including credit checks, etc...

I provided my baby book of vaccinations and was told we are just going to start over... like hell we are.

Insisted on a Titer test and all was good... but Titer costs employer more than simple giving the entire series a second time... Outlaw fits at least with HR...

But not a single person from Corp is still with the company...

I can understand the Union and Deere squaring off over medical but reality always takes over...

Insurance is the problem. Get rid of insurance and go to private pay or open up the system and let more insurance companies come in and compete. In my state we only have virtually one insurance company, Blue Cross Blue Shield.
Lobbyists pouring money into the hands of corrupt lawmakers is the problem.
Insurance Companies, Pharma, Big Tech... a long, long list.

(yeah,I know, "Political". See you all in a couple weeks  ).

A wise elder once told me when things don't make sense... Follow the Money

I have found this to be often true like when I found better coverage for my company but didn't realize the owners had a vested interest in rejecting it.

California doesn't take too kindly to folks who are independent and pay their own way like you. They want dependents that will forever need them.
