String Trimmers

I still use an old swing blade like the one on the right sometimes.

They're easy on gas and rarely need servicing.

I think mine is about 40 years old!

Hud, I had all the experience I ever wanted with one of those over 50 years ago; hope to never use one again.:D

Bird,

We're a little smarter now than we were then. Actually I don't mind using my swing blade for small jobs. It's good exercise and doesn't make much noise.

There's a big difference in using it because you want to instead of using it because you have to.

...........I'm sure you remember seeing those guys on the "gun crews" working the ditchbanks......?;)

Anyway, I'm taking this thread off topic, I apologize. Nobody wants to hear the ramblings from old timers.:D

Al,whata mean you got permission,,we need to set down and talk this marriage stuff over before its to late.
Bird, well,,just my opinion [and to aggrivate stihl owners],,seriously though,,I got an echo had it for about 5 years now,,it would be hard to beat,my neighbor has a stihl [don't know the model],but he is not real keen on it or so he says,,them shindawas are supposed to be as good or better than the echo. I bet huskys are every bit as good as their chainsaws,,,,but thing about sthil and looks like husky too does this that turns me off to both really,is this pro model and not pro model,,echo don't do that, neither does shindawa,[I am pretty sure],,they probably all come from same factory,,can't figure out the logic from a manufactors point of view in this,,some sthil saws[at least they used to],,same motor cc,,same bar size, same color,,non pro one cost 2-300 dollars,,pro model,5-600 dollars,,I know they say better materials in promodel,,but like I said, from a manufactors point of view, don't make sense to me.,,Don't know if sthil does the same with trimmers.

Sling blade,,that was a good movie,,but they are about useless,,musta been invented for chain gang use,,Now a good sharp mowing syith,[ever how you spell that word],,with a grass blade on it,,you can flat top some grass now,,might as well use a crooked stick as a sling blade,,thingy

So I got permission to get a nice string trimmer today, and I didn't even ask!

I don't have a big yard (just under 1/3 acre), but the trimmer will back up my riding mower since I skipped getting a push mower.

Any thoughts or advice on good string trimmers? If cost were no object, I'd get a top of the line Stihl. However, cost is an object and I really won't be abusing it like a Stihl likes.

I'm thinking $150 is about as much as I can spend. Lowe's had Troy-Bilt trimmers with interchangeable heads that seemed pretty nice. Especially since I can get an edger, blower, & cultivator attachments for about $50 each. Seems like a good way to get several tools for less money than buying them all separately. Of course, my experience is a tool that does a little of everything never satisfies at anything. Would that be the case here or, since I'm a light duty user, would something like that fit the bill for me?

Not so sure about the new MTD based trimmers. I got a Cub Cadet Pole saw/trimmer last year, mostly for the pole saw attachment. Hard to get to run good and has fixed jets in the carb....
Whatever you get make sure it has adjustable jets....

I bought a Troy-Bilt straight shaft in 2003 from Lowe's. I used it for trimming my small yards for several years. It started and ran well every season. I also had the brushcutter and blower attachments.

I never had very much luck with the bump knob and spent lots of time "fixing" the string. I ended up converting it to .105" diameter line because the Mississippi weeds grow big and strong. The brushcutter worked pretty well, but the blower didn't blow very hard and would lose significant power if any debris clogged the intake, which was on top of the blower.

The quick change attachment point was pretty much worn out on all three from hard use over the past 2 years. It totally stopped working a couple of months ago, the key that is cast into the flywheel sheared off and locked up the whole thing.

I traded it in to the Stihl dealer for $50 (10 times what I thought he should give me for it!) and walked out with a FS130 last Friday. Now, the weeds won't grow fast enough!

I have an Echo SRM210, straight shaft, 17 in. cut, paid $200. Great trimmer, also got the brush blade kit for another $30 or so. I saw a Homelite straight shaft at Home Depot for today, $89.

I've had a Shindaiwa 230X for 3-4 years now. Ran it dry for the winter. Put gas in it a few weeks ago and it started on the second pull. It is a straight shaft and comes with a blade kit. I've used it pretty hard especially with the blade and have not had a speck of trouble yet.
