Yes, a nice pair of needle nose pliers that have some room to twist back and forth. Grab the tab, wiggle, remove.

Use grease on the drill and tap to catch any chips and blow low pressure air into the fill hole to blow chips out.

There are tangless Heli-Coils available. More than one manufacturer of them. They require a special insertion tool. I have never used them so can't give any advice on how to make your own insertion tool. They use the same drill and tap as the standard tanged insert. FYI, sometimes the stripped out hole is large enough to be just tapped, not drilled and tapped. The usual way to find out if you don't have measuring tools is to just try tapping, carefully. Anyway, a web search for tangless thread inserts will result in many hits.
